question from poss s40 buyer
08/21/06 at 15:55:30

My commute has changed from a 65 mile round trip via freeways, to about a 14-15 mile round trip via nice backroads. I'm a rider with over 40 years experience.I am considering getting an S40.I'm wondering what owners are getting for gas mileage? Has the oil leak problem been remidied? Would the S40 be a good choice for a 5'10" 180 pounder?
I was looking at some photos in the tech section. Just curios-can the cam chain be replaced without splitting the cases?

There's topics on that in the tech section,It's not that bad of a job, you don't have to split the case.
You'd fit the savage just fine there are bigger guy's that ride um.

52 mpg with some mods last time I checked. No mods would be slightly higher. You should fit the S40 fine. It's a fun bike that actually does quite well on the interstate. Back roads and twisties are no problem.

If it's an S40 it shouldn't have the plug leak issue.  Those were corrected around the 2002 model or so Savages.

S40 (with carb and muff mod) will be the perfect for both interstate and backroad. I'm average 50-51 mpg but I ride her hard Grin

55 to 60 mpg before mods. 50 to 54 mpg after. I highly recommend the jetting, spacer and exhaust mods. It'll run much better.

its a perfect bike for those guidelines. You will need to do the exhaust, carb and spacer fix.

I got over 50 MPG (over about 6K miles) doing the type of riding you are describing plus trying to do longer rides at interstate speeds. The Savage was great for a short commute.

With that said I got a different MC because a fair amount of my riding was in colder weather and for longer distances (2600 miles last week). If you're sure that 14-15 miles will be your longest trip, the Savage should be a great MC with some personality as a plus.

If possible ride the S40 before making the plunge. It's a big single in a small cruiser frame with all that implies.
