I picked up my new S40 today, and I notice that around 45-50mph is has a pulse or shake about every 75 feet or so.  Is that normal?  Also it smells like burning rubber after shutdown.

The best way I know how to describe the pulse is a rapid tripple shake.  I wonder if a tire could be out of balance????

I've owned a KLR650 and a BMW F650GS and I don't think it's an engine vibration.

I would take this new bike back to the dealer and let them do any repairs or you will mess up your warranty...

I wasn't planning on fixing it.  I just wondered if it was normal?

By your asking it is obvious you do not think it should be normal.  The replies telling you to take it back to the dealer imply it is not normal.  Just to make it clear -- no, it is not normal.  At 45-50mph in top gear my Savage is smoother than I expected or would be willing to accept.

I would venture a guess that the smell after shutdown, on a brand new whatever, is normal.  Any oil, dust, etc. on the parts that get hot will, the first few times they get hot, burn off/outgas and smell.

Paladin is correct about the smell. Usually with new machinery the oils, paints and other chemicals used during assembly will take a few heat/cool cycles to "burn off".  That being said. If you have any concerns, ask the service tech to check it out while they are fixing the "pulse". GL

Is that you next to the Sportster?   Did you trade it or get the S40 in addition to the Sportster?  Why the S40?  After you have had it a month or so a comparison report would be greatly appreciated -- for those Savage riders thinking about getting a Sportster.

I bought a new S40 last week.  It also has a burning rubber smell after being shut off, but it is going away.  I also notice that it is MUCH smoother now, at 180 miles, than it was when brand-spankin' new.  But if you are concerned, take it back to the dealer.  I may take mine to be checked too, because there is a funny ticking noise when I'm riding.  It goes away if I pull in the clutch, and doesn't come back if I rev the engine, but when I release the clutch, it comes back.  Anyone heard of that?

PS what color did you get?

I've owned 3 Sportsters and a Superglide.  My wife doesn't ride so and I had to take a $10,000 dollar a year cut in pay recently.  So far I'm inpressed with the S40.  It's nice looking, has enough power, and is pretty smooth.  The smell I mentioned is just like the smell after a burnout.  It's not really a new bike smell.  I think I'll ride it a little and see if it smooths out some.  I hate letting people mess with my bike.

The burning smell is likely the packing in the muffler burning off and the muff gasket seating itself. Mine did this too, but went away after a couple hundred miles.

Welcome to the forum. With a burning rubber smell and a shake at speed I'd visually inspect the bike really well. Pay particular attention to the tires and belt.

If you think your S40 has plenty of power now, wait till you do a few simple performance mods  Grin

The pulse seems less noticable today.  I checked the belt/tires closely,  and I can't see anything wrong.  I believe the little Suzuki compares favorably with the 1980s era 883/900 Sportsters.  What you get for the money is way better than current Harley production.  That said, I'd probably own another Sporty if I could afford it.  I'm keeping an eye out for an older one to build a rat bobber out of.  I miss the Harley exhaust note;(

I'm just gonna throw this out there as an off-the-wall guess, but if your S40 is bone stock, that pulsing you feel might be the leanness caused by the white spacer.  I know mine did that until I shaved the spacer down to richen the midrange.

It would faithfully do it in between 40-50 mph, would act like a pulsing sometimes, a hestitation at other times.  Just a thought...

Bobber? Did I hear bobber? Man you have a great little bobber in the making right there. Just buy you an older version. Way cheaper than a sporty. Grin And the exhaust just needs the customary swap with a hollow pipe and viola, instant noise maker. Wink
