Need some advice:

Rejetted to a 155 Main and 55 Pilot, Did the white spacer mod using a couple of washers instead of modifying the spacer.  The good news is the backfiring is gone, the bad, it will only go about half throttle until it starts bogging down.

Assumed, the idle mixture screw needed adjustment. Popped the plug off the idle mixture screw spot. The screw was very tight and only turned 2 or 3 times. I didnt notice any difference in idle no matter where the screw was set.  I got a little aggressive and now its all boogered up.

2 questions:

Is the idle mixture screw setting the culprit in losing power at half throttle?

Can I replace that screw, once extracted, with a screw from the hardware store or is it specialized in nature?

Many thanks to all of you. I couldn't have done the mods without it. And I won't get out of this jam without you guys either,

The screw is special, but available...this is from ronayers.com, but there are others...  # 41

I had mine boogered up and replaced 41, 42, 43, and 44 just to be sure.  The extraction of the old screw was the most stressful part.

If you have stock pipes and air, 155 main may be a bit rich, and causuing the mid-range bog.

...others here are much smarter about tuning the carb, though.  So hang on and somebody will pick up on this pretty quick...

Have a sportster muff on it. Thus, my desire to richen it up a bit and get the backfiring to stop.

bogging down how bad - like real bad? if the diaphram spring isn't in correct it will act like that sort of - possible to have it jump to the side when you put cap back on -

or you mean bog down just a little?

It gets to half throttle and then nothing more. It just stays the same for the second half of the throttle. When I back off it will sometimes lurch a bit. But not much.

That is possible. I'll check that tomorrow. Good idea!

that sounds like it - another fellow had the spring slip to the side and it did just that - worked like a half throttle governor - guess it blocks the travel of the diaphram

Curiosity got the better of me. Wasn't the spring, but the diaphragm itself wasn't seated right. I guess it was burping a little air past it. Anyway, screams now.

Thanks for your help and making me look in that area. I appreciate it.

TVR,

That was quick.  2 hours to get to the diaphragm, get it situated and reply. Glad you got it fixed.

BTW, Reelthing is a storehouse of knowledge.

Not sure of your elevation but you may consider changing that main jet to a 152.5. The 155 may turn out to be too rich for the stock air filter causing the bike to run too rich. This will eventually lead to a fouled sparkplug.  Something to keep an eye on.

you'll want to give it more air too. swiss cheese the air box door or pull the air horn is the two most common methods.

I understand the swiss cheese on the door, but not the air horn removal. Which would work better?

I am very pleased with the added acceleration the rejetting brought.
