You're going to do what with that Savage? Why??

So I've been meaning to post about my savage chopper rebuild for a while, but just haven't gotten around to it. It's been a while since I've been up on this board, well posted at least - I've still been checking in from time to time - nice to see most of the regulars are still here.

Anyway, so here's what I got going on. I'm taking my 1987 Savage and chopping/rebuilding it from the ground up. Chopping/cutting the frame and welding on a hardtail section (with 6" of stretch in the back), chain conversion, ribbed mustang gas tank, custom fabbed exhaust, sprung solo seat, custom fabbed fake oil bag/battery box to hold all the electronics, trailer fender in the back (or maybe a ribbed fender if I can get one cheap) and I haven't decided if I'm running a front fender or not. I got a couple other things too, but those are the big mods.

The bike is down with the welder right now (www.tanksbytigman.com) and we'll be starting the chopping in January. I'll be down there filming and taking photos of the whole thing, which I'll be sure to share with all you guys once I post them. For the time being, here's a pic of good ole girl right before I sent her down to get hacked up

For any of you guys into choppers and home built motorcycles, you can also check out my website for lots of cool scoots: www.knucklebusterinc.com

Suggest you go for a retro-bobber rear fender. You might have to find a place for the electronics but it's worth it.

Suggest you continue to use the stock black front fender. Suzuki has done a good job of fitting this fender to the tire so that is is almost invisable. The Harley Sportster stock front fenders look awful.

Back again.

Suggest you get rid of the rear fender mounted light and find a way to mount the rear lights on the left side low, say at the axel or passenger peg. Get rid of the passenger pegs. The objective here is to capture that bobber look in back.

You need to decide on a seat early, so you can plan on how you want the bobbed fender to look. I've heard on this website, the sporty Harley 1200 seat is very good.

Get a J&P Cycles catalog and look for other ideas.

Are you going to have a new tank fabricated? The stock tank is pretty good. The tank could get really costly. You have to plan how the seat and tank fit together.

Well, have fun with it. It's a good project.

Just to clear up what I'm doing, here's a run down:

Frame: Custom hard tail section by Tanks By Tigman. The seat rails (from the square tube back) will be cut and everything from behind engine cradle back will be gone (cut right before the swing arm pivot point). There is also a possibility that the square tube may need to be cut so that the tank I want to put on it will work. The new hardtail section will add 6" of stretch in the back. The belt drive will also be converted to chain drive.

Front Fender: I'm about 85% sure I won't be using a front fender.

Rear Fender: Stock fender will be replaced either with a trailer fender or a ribbed after market fender.

Electronics: The whole bike will be rewired and streamlined. Anything that can be removed will be (not much really though). Most of the electronics will reside in a custom fabricated fake oil tank, that will also work as a battery box.

Gas Tank: Aftermarket ribbed mustang tank. I've already got it and didn't cost me much at all.

Seat: Sprung Solo Seat, red sparkle - I love sparkle seats for some reason.

Paint: Not sure yet, lots of ideas, but something two tone for sure with a simple graphic treatment on the tank. I'm sure there will be some pin striping in there too.

Lights: All the turn signals and tail light will be replaced with aftermarket ones. I'll probably use a repop Vincent tail light, not sure about the turn signals yet.

Mirrors: Something small, possibly a dental mirror hook up.

Bars: Mini Apes - the ones in the pic above are staying on.

Exhaust: Home brew custom fabbed by yours truly.

Front End: Stock, but will get a fully polish job, mmm shinny.

Wheels: Stock, except for the rear gear replacement in the back for the chain conversion.
