Stupid Savage...

...is makin' me angry!  Alrighty.  I ride winters, this one no exception.  I got this bike, and had a pop to it (Jardine exhaust).  After some digging, I found larger jets, and a DynoJet needle kit in her.  I have the needle at one step below the top notch (Making the needle go almost as low as possible)  Still pops now and then.  When I adjust the Idle mix screw (the plug was gone), it doesn't seem to affect much....I can turn it all the way in and the bike seems to run okay.  Vacuum leak somewhere? Any suggestions?

You are going the wrong way with the needle, you want more gas to solve the LEAN condition. If you still have the pop, look for air leaks around carb/manifold or yor exhaust pipe at the flange.

First, what year is your Savage?  If it's one of the early models, they have larger jets already as well as an adjustable needle with (I believe) 5 slots/positions.  The DJ needle has more slots/positions (7, I think). If you already have at least a 152.5 main jet, you'll probably be okay.  Whether you use a 152.5, a 155 or 157.5 is very individualized.  I'm just trying to be sure as to whether you have early model stock jets and needle or if they've truly been changed out.

Next, I'd suggest you try following the procedures in the Lancer's Straight & Simple Carb Tuning thread in the Tech Ref forum.  If you still think your pilot adjustment is making no difference, look into upsizing the pilot jet to a 55 if it isn't already.  If it's already a 55, leave it.

Last, it's always possible you have an exhaust leak.  I spent a lot of time retuning my carb until I finally replaced both exhaust gaskets.  The gaskets fixed the backfiring.

My idle screw is the same way,  I get a slight drop in idle speed but it still runs fine when fully closed.  If I go 2 1/2 out I get a little sooty but again it  still runs fine.  Both ways backfire.  Raising the idle speed helps a bit with the backfires.
Don't think this is universal among the savages, but I can't see anything wrong in my carb.  Let me know if you figure anything out.

You might try looking for exhaust leaks. I'm told that causes backfires.

Also, I've found that adjusting the idle speed up a bit also helps with the backfires when you roll off the throttle.

I still get a backfire on shutdown and I'm running a 55 idle jet.  I think this bike will always backfire on shutdown.

God do i know this feeling Roll Eyes check the valve settings? and the throttle adjustment too. is the throttle valve tight or is there a gap?while looking in there see the holes in the throat?. shoot carb cleaner in them. If there is a blockage the air isnt getting sucked in to make a mix happen. good luck!

almost forgot Roll Eyes the 2 tubes on the sides of the carb, are they clear and hooked up to the air box(is there and air box)?some mod's they just hang around and can get filled with uchky stuff, this slows down air flow/mix. if no air box, is the hose from the top of the engine filtered ?

If it's still backfiring after checking those things, next you might try a new gasket between the exhaust clamp & cylinder head. Torque to 13-20 ft. lbs & recheck the torque once in awhile. If that gasket's too compressed it will backfire some even with proper jetting.

Alrighty...thanks for all the suggestions.  I'm gonna turn up the idle some (I always leave my bikes at just barely running...that's just the way I was taught) and order me up a new head-to-headpipe gasket and see what that does for me....

Gov,

A leaky diaphragm in the petc0ck will do this.  See this thread for cheapo fix:

Some have the opinion that just idling high enuff to keep it running isn't okay cuz the opil pressure isn't high enuff to keep the top end oiled with a really low idle.
I raised mine,

Greg, when you show off your gizmo's & recommend them ytou are supposed to include where they come from & what kinda $$ is involved. Some of us are sitting on the fence, just waiting on a push.I WANT a tach. I just haven't seen one I thonught was a good deal yet. Oh, & I have done the "consider the cost of a rebuild" It's just the typoical longevity of the engine convinces me I don't NEED one as bad as I want one. So, I NEED a good deal before I can justify spendin the $$. I wonder where I could get a used one? Can an automotive tach be used at all? Would I have to multiply the reading by 8?
