Anyone helicoiled the L130 (black bolt)?
12/30/06 at 04:12:48

Hi all!

Has anyone helicoiled the L130 (black bolt) on the head cover - and if so any hints?  Mine is stripped and weeps oil.  It seems I'll have to remove the head to do it  Sad
What size coil will I need?  They seem to come in different pitches and lengths.

(BTW - seasons greetings to all!)

I need to do the same thing, but have not taken the head & cylinder off yet.  Too many things happening lately to get to it yet.  I was thinking of doing all of those long bolts at the same time.  That would eliminate a future problem of another stripped threads situation.

Remove the black bolt and take it to your favorite hardware store where the heli-coils are kept and they will have a guage which will tell you the size, threads/inch, whatever you need for a proper fit/application.

I've managed to effect a temporary fix!

I ran a length of M6 threaded rod from the local hardware store down the L130 hole - it seems to go slightly deeper that the L130 bolt and has found enough thread to fasten securely.  I cut it off to size with a hacksaw - placed the gasket washer and a washer over it and ran an M6 nut down the protruding part of the rod - hey-presto - no weeping oil!

This gives me a bit of a breather while I locate helicoils and a gasket set for a permanetnt fix.

Looking at how far down in the cylinder wall the threads begin, I can't see how it is possible to install the helicoil insert.  I'll see what I can come up with and let you all know. If that does not work, I may use the threaded rod trick.

good luck!  I've resigned myself to the fact that I'll have to take the head off to install the helicoil - which is why I've come up with an alternative for now.  Keep us posted!

I've got the head off and the engine on the bench, but I still don't see a way to install the helicoil. I'll keep you posted.

Does anyone know the source of the oil that leaks up around this bolt? I am thinking of JB weld or some other epoxy product at repair the threads but don't want to seal up an oil gallery!

I was wrong! (I think). Looking more carefully at that hole in the cylinder wall, I think the reason I thought the threads started so far down is that they have been completely stripped out near the top!  I will attempt the helicoil this weekend and let you know how it turns out.

Oke, you got the kit.
Try to drill the hole on a vertical drilling machine if you can.
Tap the thread with the special supplied tap by hand using a T-handle. One turn and 1/4 turn back  till 1 1/2 lenght of the coil.
Insert the helicoil in the grove of the supplied T-handle,  turn carefully, don't push, untill the coil is approx. 1/8" under the surface of the head.
Break-off the end piece with needlenose pliers.

If you knew allready how to do helicoilsh1t disregard this post, maybe this will help others.

Did approx 36 M6 helicoils once in the cilinderhead of a Honda S600.

Success! The helicoil repair worked perfectly. The kit I used is part number HC 5546-6 (M6X1) from Carquest. It comes with 12 inserts and cost $40.

yes, yes great! but where are the pictures?   Smiley

Congratulations!  Thanks for keeping us posted.  Out of curiosity, how long are the helicoils?  Does M6 x 1 mean 1 cm long?  If they were too long  would it be possible to cut them or do they have to be the right length.  I'll be shopping for mine soon.

M6x1 is the metric thread designation.
M means metric
6 or 6mm is the bolt diameter ( a little less than 1/4")
x1 is the pitch of the thread or for every turn of the screw 1mm progression.
english thread designation is 1/4x20 or 1/4" diameter bolt and 20 threads per inch.  Which means for every turn the bolt progresses 1/20" (.02" or 1/2 mm)
Comprende?

Off hand, I would say the coil inserts are about 3/8 inches long. They probably could be cut shorter if necessary.
