Posts: 870 Frisco, Texas Gender:	Carb Air Screw Boogered 01/01/07 at 14:16:10 Tried to extract the boogered up butter-soft air screw and thought I had it when the extractor snapped. Tried and cussed but it ain't coming out. Unless someone has any ideas, I'm in the market for another carb. Suggestions anyone?

Maybe before ya spend any more time or $$$ on that one you should holler at one of the guys that sells carbs. Who is that folks? Lancer?

I pulled out the brass screw & spring, put in a new one & glued the aluminum piece back on. (JB Weld glue)Worked fine.

I can think of 2 options outside of buying a new carb. mess up either and you need a new one anyway.

both of these ideas are based on boring, not drilling, the snapped extractor bit out. It will be nearly impossible to drill it out, of course.

1) get a diamond tiped BORING bit. bore the snapped extractor bit out (i.e. destroy it). re-drill the air screw for the next size extractor bit. don't snap it. install new air screw. THIS MAY NOT WORK!

2) get a diamond tiped BORING bit. bore the snapped extractor bit out (i.e. destroy it). get and install a helicoil (you will end up drilling out the original threads). install new air screw. THIS MAY NOT WORK!

First day we have seen the sun in a while. Was sure wanting to go for a ride. Looked at the boogered screw in the carb once more and decided that I'd give it another shot. Drilled out the pot metal and then took a dremel after it. Alot of grinding and cussing later and the screw came out. Didnt look like it had half the threads left in the carb, but I thought what the hell and put the new screw in. Alas, it fired up and I got to go for my ride after all.

Dremel's are plumb magic!

I tried to get a decent shot of the butchering, but this is the best I could get. You get the idea.

Persistence paid off this time.

I think that the only problem was technique. Might ought to put it in the tech section.

You said that you tried to "extract" it, which I guess means the plug. You were just removing the brass plug, right? Were you using a screw extractor?

I took mine out by simply drilling a hole. Very gently drilling with 2 sizes. That was enough to relieve the "pressed in" pressure and the plug came spinning out on the second drill bit.

Hindsight is no fun but maybe it will help someone else next time...

No, I drilled out the plug. The brass screw was very soft and was in there really tight. Boogered the threads beyond repair and then almost had the screw broke loose when the extractor snapped. Thus my fun with dremel to get down to it and cut a new slot (after grinding out the extractor. I'll take a picture of the removed screw. Its a beaut.
