New S40 Mod Questions...

Question.

I'm new to riding and have bought an '06 S40. I basically have about 550 miles on her and have thought about doing some mods.

I did add a new backrest bought from the dealer.....but thats it.

So my question is for those that have been around and seen or done many changes to their bikes.......what if *any would you recommend.

With a budget around 500 or less, is there any 1, 2, or even 3 top mods that you would jump on (starting out with a new bike).

Some ideas I have been tinkering around with after reading some on these boards:

K&N drop in replacement

Rejetting

Exhaust muffler replacement

But as a newbie, I truly don't know all the pros and cons of each.

If there is any big brothers or sisters out there willing to respond to someone like myself, it would be a great big help.

I also have an 06 S40 with 2850 milers on it since July. There is nothing wrong with doing the mods you read about in the forum, these guiys are extremely knowledgable of the S40. I am like you, very tight budget. Until my warrantee runs out, I am going to keep everything as is, then start thinking about any mods. I am very pleased with the way mine runs as is for now. I do a lot more highway riding than I was planning on doing when I bought it, because I ride with the Patriot Guard Riders, and it does just fine as is.
I love the little S40 as is for what it is............A fun commuter with highway capability (70MPH). The only thing I have added is a back rest, bags and a windshield, all factory, dealer installed

I think getting a couple of thousand miles on a MC before doing any mods is good advice. After that if you still want to modify your S40, top mod for me would be some kind of luggage, second would be a windscreen, third would be a larger gas tank. The mods you mentioned are all performance mods that will get you a little better performance. Putting those extra miles on before you spend time and money will let you know if that is all you need.

Reply #4 - 01/04/07 at 12:15:50 1. carb rejet with or without adding a free flowing muffler. This transforms the bike and will make it smoother and last longer. I like the Supertrapp, but anything that flows more than stock will be a big improvement. 2. seat lift or total seat replacement with a Sportster seat. The stock seat is poor :'(

calling the stock seat "poor" is generous. may also want to consider a better headlight (bulb or the whole thing).

I agree w/ DynoBob, though. A mild rejet on the carb will make the bike (and you) happier. If you do it yourself, the cost will be under $5, assuming you have basic hand tools.

On the other hand, I've got a bone stock 2nd savage with 11k miles. I'm not gonna modify it at all for a while...

K&N drop in - $20
harley muff - $30-$40
152.5 - 155 main/55 pilot jet - $6
getting looks from harley's cause your sleeper sounds like thiers.....priceless

also recomend bags - $50

I did all these mods and i am a complete newbie to the mechanincal world. bike is finiky but simple enough for a newbie. Do it yourself or pay a buddy with beer to help you out. Do not go to the stealership unless you like giving money away.

Reply #8 - 01/04/07 at 23:10:51 Get the bike out of the warrenty zone before you start tinkering with the engine. You can get the bags and any other hang-ons, but wait till you get to about 2K miles. After 2K miles then SuperTrapp, K&N filter, and rejet. You will be amazed. BTW. Use a decent lubricant like Amsoil.

the newer s40 seat and bars may not be as bad as the older savage seat and bars, those were #1 PRIORITY when we brought debby's '96 home(they sucked!) the more she rode it, the more she found a need for hiway pegs, especially on longer rides. engine guard $90, hiway pegs $40. i have saddle bags on my bike, so she didn't have a big need for them, as most of her long riding was with me, but we added a sissy bar purse/bag that she could grab and carry for glasses, wallet, etc.

What mods you make depend heavily on what usage you will be subecting the bike to.

I'm a city commuter/shopper. My first addition was a pair of hard saddlebags to carry all my junk in. Since I ride at night I added run/brake lights to my rear turn signals. (headlight is fine, but I'll be getting a 7" one mostly for appearance.) I would have been quite satisfied with a 250, I am more than delighted with the stock power -- but I couldn't stand the sound and switched to a MAC muffler.

If not for the need to carry groceries I would not have the saddlebags. I would instead have lost the rear fender/rails/sissybar, switch to a sprung solo saddle, and would be looking very much like Sluggo's bobber.

If I could find one I would add a trailer hitch.

Reply #12 - 01/25/07 at 18:20:36 The first things I would do are: 1. Luggage rack (from Suzuki....not a real good rack, but the only show in town). 2. Trunk box. I have the black one from JCW. I can carry two gallons of milk in it and have room left over. Mounts easily to the Suzuki luggage rack. 3. Small windshield. Helps out on cold days. Have fun!

If by some chance you do like giving money away, I have an empty pocket. Grin

With the bike still new I would advise against any mods for now. Find out if you are satisfied with the stock performance.

Performance mods...

Definitely a rejet, most certainly a new exhaust and possibly a new air filter. (I didn't change the filter on mine), a braided brake line, Amal carburetor, a forkbrace is a good idea too

Comfort mods...

Seat lift or exchange is a must, windshield, pullback handle bars if you don't like leaning forward, ape hangers are also a possibility, suspension upgrades are always a plus for comfort as well as performance

Cosmetic mods...

Luggage, new lighting front and rear, aftermarket mirrors, whatever chrome you can find (good luck) if you like that sort of thing. Personally not my cup-o-tea, but to each their own. New grips, and/or pegs (these also work for comfort)

And so on, and so on, and so on............
