Oil leak problems
01/21/07 at 16:30:54

I like every thing I have read about the Savage performance
but this oil leak problem makes me wonder if I should buy a Savage. I just want to ride, not be bothered by problems. Do the new Savages have oil leak problems?

Suzuki improved the design of the plug, hence the partnumber change.

The procedure to install remained unchanged,

             NO SEALING of the plug.

Check the WSM of Suzuki and Clymer, NO sealant.
But you better do seal the plug for extended no leak riding.

almost 14,000 miles. It gets ridden as hard as I am capable of riding it without crashing & it's not leaking. I still think it was a good choice for me as a starter bike. I would recommend a Suzuki 650 to anyone thinking about getting started riding. Even IF I had the problem others have had, all I would have to do is fix that ONE stinkin little problem. This is a low maintenance ride. And, that maintenance can be done at home for little $$$.

I've been riding motorcycles for 21 years, and I like mine better than any cruiser I've owned.

Barry, have you ever ridden a Ninja 250? I've been thinkin that might just be a fun "pretend" Ricky Road Racer" bike. I am 5'6" & can flat foot a Ninja 250.Seems the riding position is decent for an older guy. Anyone have an opinion?

from my (admittedly limited) experience of clip ons & rear sets (that's one for  you old ones, especially mickthelimey)
I would suggest any crotch racer type stance is OK if you want to just go like a bat out of heck all the time, butt hanging off the seat, but for around town it'd soon bring about a sore back, aching wrists & general discomfort.

like I said, my experience is limited, but that is what I reckon... Smiley

Thats the deal with the 250 ninja, small engine, nothing to make a fellow lay down to reach the grips. Almost an upright position. My wrists & shoulders will have none of the crotch rokkit position. Well, long enough to ride someone elses long enuff to say I rode one, but, not something I could do enough to make it worthwhile to buy one,

I also have a ninja 250...The riding position is very upright and comfortable. I have done several 500 mile + rides on the Ninja with no discomfort whatever. I rarely ride the Savage anymore except for short rides around town..

By the way I'm 62 years old , does that qualify as an older guy ??  lol   Grin

My '02 started leaking somewhere around 18,000 miles. Luckily, there were detailed messages here on what the problem was and how to fix it. Got it done over a weekend and I have a clean bike again.

Don't kid yourself, all bikes have problems. The advantage to the Savage/S40 is that this bike has been around for many many years with the same basic design. All the common problems have been identified and the fixes are widely known.

If You don't enjoy working on Your bike and keeping it in shape, the best thing is to stick with the cars or buy a Harley and have it serviced in the dealership. They will detail Your bike after every service. The cost of the maintenance will keep the mileage so low, that You will not see a drop of oil in the floor.
