Oil CHange O-Ring Missing
01/21/07 at 17:25:24

Changed the oil today. First time. The little O-ring that goes on the engine and then the filter slips over was missing. Looked at Ron Ayers and it had this part#09280-15007

O-RING D:2.4 ID

A. Is it essential to have this O-ring?
B. Can I just go to autozone and get an O-ring with a 2.4 Inside Diameter? 2.4 centimeters, I am assuming.

Item 10 is what I'm referring to.

Just checked the two remaining Genuine Suzuki Filters I have. N O ring. Also, the back of the package shows the O ring that goes on the cover, but not the one that goes under the filter.  Since it didnt have one on it, when I changed, I wondered how essential it was.

Thanks for the reply. I'll check autozone for one. Hate to buy one for 76 cents and pay 7 bucks for shipping.

I don't recall the o-rings with my GS oil filters either.

However, as said, they seal the inlet side of the filter and without it you could be bypassing under the filter.

The previous owner dropped it in the pan and never knew it was there.

If you can get a nice slip fit from Auto-Zone, I'd do it too.

Thanks Greg. I'll go by tomorrow and see what they have.  I figure its not a huge deal, as its run at least 1,000 miles without it.

Like your ever changing sigline pic. May have to do that myself. What camera are you using?

I don't5 have one, pretty sure Ive never had one. been like that ever since I can remember. The only O-ring I have seals the case pieces. I will look at it next oil change & see if I can find one. Maybe a garden hose rubber>?? LOL

If so, you need to pay attention both to the diameter of the ring (2.4cm) and the thickness of the rubber 'O' itself.

Would anyone be willing/able to measure the thickness of the O-ring perhaps? That would be quite helpful.

After reading this thread I went into the garage to rummage through the "out box" and find KLX's old O ring just in case.

I've never gotten an o-ring included with a filter and I've used both GS and K&N filters so far.

I bought 2 Emgo filters & neither had o rings in them - maybe I was unlucky. lucky when I first did oil change there was one there. was going to replace it (anal - moi?) but as Suzuki store did not carry one (source of my first oil filter - never again - too dear but I was eager to change oil/filter soon as I bought bike) I just put old one back & used it through last 2 changes.

I order both o-rings 10 at time (2 bikes here) so I have them on hand.  I have a good assortment of metric o-rings and Suzuki seems to use the diameter or size i don't usually have. I have tried to get new drain plug gaskets, as after many crushings, they make it very hard to get the drain plug loose. The Mitisubshi dealer told me that they pulled the threaded bung out of an oil pan one and they included that gasket with their filters at the dealer level. Finally ended up getting some that are close from the auto parts store as the ones tha kept showing up were the wrong size. I will say the parts manager at the time tried and even made a couple calls to the tech center to get the correct ones. I try to keep extra exhaust rings, formed figure 8 o-ring for the head cover and seals for the cover bolts in stock rather than have to wait for the parts to get here. Doesn't cost any extra for me to have them when I need them. Maybe come from my marine (water) background when lack of spares can ruin you day(s).  Max

Max. the only O-ring my bike has seen in the last 13.000 miles is the one that goes in the case. I have none on the filter itself that I am aware of. Am I screwed? I mean, it's still goin thru the filter OR bypassing it, so it's kinda sorts filtered & still getting oil, right? It's not starved is it? I will get with findin some O those O rings, Wunner WHY they dont just stick them in with the filters & charge accordingly? Sheesh..

I'd guess it would only bypass a small amount and wouldn't lose any sleep over it. I may have stuck on the spigot it goes on anyway and be there unnoticed. As it is spring loaded a thicker o-ring would work fine if you could find the correct I.D.. I agree they whould include them with the filter, but as I remember the filter fits many models of Suzukis and maybe even other bike/ATV models which may use a different setup when it comes from other than Suzuki Savage fitment.

BUT...Smiley

As the filter begins to get dirty the oil flow will likely follow the path of least resistance and bypass the filter even more.

Just a thought.
