01/23/07 at 16:43:02

My first bike purchase. i am looking at a 91 650 savage with 6,000 miles. it has no dings, dents, scratches etc.
paint is still bright (maroon) owner wants $1,200 for it.
is that  a fair price?  will it carry my spouse and I. i am 250 she is 135.

The price is great. the mileage is decent for a 91 and if the paint is good as you say, I'd say buy it. It should mechanically carry the two of you, though you may be a little cramped for a long ride. JMO

That is a very good price. Lots of discussions on here about riding two up. Depends on distance you want to travel and how comfortable you/ she have to be. I wouldnt dream of riding any distance two up on mine (an 01), but piddling around is fine. Height seems to have more to do with comfort than weight it seems. I'm 5'9 and it is close to feeling too small for me, but then again, I'm not going to take off cross country on it either.

The following points are JMHO:
1- price is fair for the model.
2-mileage is disturbing as it has avaeraged 375 miles per year in its lifetime. Not good for a machine that thrives on use.
3-I think your borderline for long distance two up riding. Does your better half want to ride with you often??
4-Are you planning on using this bike for commuting purposes??
others will have alternative views. What other bikes are you considering??

Yea I know it's your opinion but you do have me curious.
When I bought my bike(96) it only had 2700 miles on it. That's 270mi/yr. It has had no problems that the other bikes here haven't had. I'm not trying to pick a fight but please, enlighten me. Why would a low milage, air cooled bike be a bad thing?

that's a pretty good price, IMO.

w/ that much mass 2-up, it'll still be peppy around town (assuming it's stock), but a bit slow on the free way.

SW, I agree with BB here.  motorcycle like to be ridden. and maintained.  low mileage bikes scare me, esp crotch rockets.  2 year old gimme a 40k mile bike.  why?  You can bet it was taken care of.  that's how it got so much mileage.

now a savage w/ the cam cahin issues might be a different story... but we all knwo that and aren't afraid to repalce the cam chain+

I guess I can see the logic in that but it still seems that a low mileage bike should have no problems. If it hasn't been rode much, it's probably (but not necessarily) because the owner was scared of it or just simply didn't have time to ride it. In my case it was the latter. The previous owner had 4 other bikes in the stable and his wife (it was hers) preferred to ride with him. But like I said, I can see were it might be something to be cautious of. Maybe a reason to ask a few extra questions. Thanks Vroom. Smiley

270/365=.739 per day over the life of the bike. Not what I would call cared about. I suppose if it was a museum peice, but if the PO does not care enough to ride it, what makes you think they care enough to maintain the bike?? i agree many bikes have no problem being run a few miles till someone cares enough to ride them as they were designed. But I have yet to see a bike that was designed to operate less than a mile a day. even my generator needs to be started every month and I run at least a 1/4 tank of fuel through it. I bought a 2001 with a little less than 2500 miles. i was suspect because of very low mileage. I rode it like I stole it to see what would happen. 30 miles the first run and 70 odd the second time. It seemed to be ok so I bought it for a reduced price. again JMHO. NTTAWWT.

maybe it is just me, but I've always valued bikes with low mileage - to me indicates still lots of life in it yet before it will need much work (dreaded cam chain, oil seal, etc).

think Kelly Blue book "penalizes" bikes with high mileage.

Well I guess, but how much maintaining could it need with less than an oil change's worth of miles on it? Undecided

Not really taking sides here, the real answer is "it depends."

If the bike has low miles and the owner didn't change the oil for long periods of time for lack of miles, rust will form on the inside of the engine.  This is MUCH WORSE than relatively high miles.  On the other hand, with once or twice a year oil changes, and low miles, the engine should be in primo condition.  The only thing is some things wear out with time, not miles, but most of those parts are cheap (i.e. anything rubber, neoprene, nylon, etc.)
