The nipple goes in the dimple to keep the controls positioned on the bar.
Loosen up the bolts on the left hand grip (easier one) to see. You'll have to get it really loose to turn the controls. They keep the assembly positioned.

It is real easy to file off your nipples if you want.

I broke my dimple off with a hemmer when one of he screws holding the control box on was seized.
BUT,
I sitll don't think those are the same dimples. the dimples I am thinking of are more like gullys for wires to enter the hd control boxes.
the pic I want to post is broken up into 4 pics, so here's the link:

Hmmm... I thought he was talking about dimpled bends in the bars - not the alignment holes for the switches' nipples. I just filed those nipples off with a rat-tail file.

I like those a lot! Like the bib too. Where did you get that?
The bib is the Suzuki brand. From a dealership.

Nice lookin Rob.. Yep, garage is a bit too neat. & the wires are absol;utely symmetrical leaving the bars. Okay Rob is a neat freak! Unless I miss my guess, Rob uses his turn signals at every turn & cancels within 50 feet of exit. Watches Monk & points out the stuff Monk misses.
Here's a bit more info to add to your

analysis... The tank doesn't look the same anymore since I removed the decals and sprayed it with truck bed liner. I have also done the front fender and both side panels, I still have to do the rear fender. I like low maintenance.

it "needs" alignment dimples, but as pointed out, you just take those off with a file. it does not need the flanders style dimples, or as I called them, gullys.
the bars do need to be knurled, though, so the rises can effectively grab them

To be perfectly clear, you don't take off the "dimples" with a file. It is the "nipples" that you remove with a file
