i'm a total hypocrite for saying this, but: it would be a really good idea to take the MSF course, as many on here have already suggested. i haven't taken it but my wife took the course and was very pleased.
the savage is a great choice for a first bike (and last bike) for a million reasons that i won't reiterate because they're all over this forum.
my reasons: they're nearly bulletproof, really easy to maintain, really easy to customize, and last but not least, really fun and easy to ride.
also, check these out...
http://www.hit-air.com/i'll probably get one of these when i've got some extra cash. might make you and your wife feel a little safer. i hear great things about them and the baltimore police are actually wearing them now if i'm not mistaken.
as far as the corvettes go... i personally feel like i'm a much safer person on the bike than in the cage. it's nothing for me to 140mph+ in my GTI, but i'm just as happy or moreso doing 40mph + or - on the bike.
