no i havent adjusted mixture screw that will be next
altitude is 991ft

Hey jd06s40,

I have a Sportster muff on mine and I have a 152.5 and the 1/2 spacer mod. I have tirned the adjustment screw out 3 turns. Now I only get a poof when I shut the bike off. I am going to order a 55 pilot to see if I can get that to stop also. Since I am just south of Columbus I figured I would through this in.

You should get the 55 pilot. I think lancer says if you go out more then 2 it is helpful to go up on the pilot. If I order one tomorrow do you want me to get you one?

sounds like your over adjusting - carry the screw driver with you - and sneak up on it - like a 1/16 turn at time - you get up close to 3 and for sure it's time to hop the pilot jet up a size -

Quick question.

Does each Main and Pilot have a serial number for the dealer to look up?

I went today to grab some and they had 2 different types of 152.5. A shot and fat hex jet and a short and thin hex jet. Both 152.5

Ive not opened mine up to see what the stock looks like but they had a 750 intruder back in the shop....so they opened it up and it looked like the bigger / fatter of the two. But the guy said he couldn't be positive as to which one I really needed since it was a different bike.

Also he didn't have the 55 pilot I wanted in stock so he needed to order it also.

Of course he tried pushing the Dynajet Kit but I kept turning him down....

**Edit** I did some searching and found some pics in the Tech section. The fatter hex looks like the winning ticket but is there still a way to find it with serial numbers or some stock code?

The main jet is the Mikuni Large Round jet, N100.604.

The pilot jet is the Mikuni N151.067 or the BS30/96 (which has holes).

Here's a good picture: http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/department.aspx?Division=6&Department=66...

And here's a link to a thread: http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=RubberSideDown;action=display;n...

Well I finally got my 55 pilot in. I hope it works or helps. I started it up and still seems to have some backfire. I did adjust the screw out to about two or so.

It is snowing here today so I am not able to test drive it until maybe tomorrow or Sunday.

The good thing about the jetting is that you don't have to take out the carb to do it.

I will have to see if I can pick up the K&N air filter and do that if the jetting does not help completly.

I have 500 miles on my 2007 S40 and the pipe is turning blue starting at the motor for about 10 inches down the pipe. I'm thinking the mixture is a bit lean.
This weekend I pulled out the brass plug and adjusted the idle jet and that made it idle better and pop less. Then I took of the seat and peaked under the fuel tank. The frame is in the way of removing the top of the carburetor. How is everyone getting into the works of the carb? Are you removing the carb completely?
I ordered the shop manual but it's on back order so I'm guessing a bit on where things are. It looks like the top of the carburetor has a diaphram under it that lifts the slide as vacuum increases and I'm guessing that the needle(s) hang from that slide. I'm further guessing there is a white spacer that is easy to see with a tag on it saying "remove this spacer for top performance"  Smiley Well, maybe not, but I'm hoping that it is obvious. I'm not sure what a pilot jet is vs. a main jet unless it is some kind of mid range jet.
I'm wondering if my guesses are close enough to get me though this or if I should wait for the manual to arrive and hope my exaust pipe doesn't get too ugly in the meantime.
It would be nice to see a picture of a semi-exploded BS40 showing the spacer and other innards.

Take two of these and call us in the morning...

You can either remove the carb or twist it to gain access to the top or bottom.   Grin

glockhead - a suggestion - as the posting you tagged onto is already pretty long & old may want to paste your question onto a new one & start afresh.

in meantime, read everything on here that sounds interesting & relevant to the carb (know there is a lot but it helped me when I first got my savage) can get a exploded veiw of a carb from somehwere on this site as I recall - just not saure where. but think it is a copy of an exploded view from ron ayers web site (good source for online parts - cost less than dealer & take no longer if dealer has to special order for you!) google ron ayers site & look up the s40 & find the carb from there.

may want to replace the screws in top & bottom of carb with some stainless steel allen head ones - available for many hardware stores. can't recall size but if you ask on this site someone will tell ytou (know it is in the tech section) got to go as dinner is just being served & want to eat it hot.

oh yeah - don't throw the spacer out - most get by with either putting in a washer in its stead or filing it down, depending on their altitude (whioch you may want to include in your posting - it helps with advice on jetting - note my jetting is not like most as I live 4,500 feet up).

hope this is some help - may want to wait for manual but like I said why not start new posting & start reaDING THROUGH THIS SITE A LOT! (darn CAP KEY - AGGHH - DINNER ON TABLE!) Grin

IF y0u decide to just use a washer or something to replace the white spacer with something thinner, make sure it will go down in the tube the white spacer sits in. Else, the carb will "think" the entire spacer has been removed.
Don't ask how I know... OH,, & it will deliver seriously crummy MPG. You might even wait to mess with the white spacer & just do the jetting & see how the performance comes up.
