How Do You Measure RPM When Setting Idle Speed?
07/05/07 at 20:26:05
For years, I've been setting the idle speed on my dirt bikes and my Savage by ear (no tach).
For those of you without tachs mounted on the bike, how do you set your idle speed?
TIA!

I try to count really fast...
No really, I just put it a little higher than I like, to make sure I'm on the safe side with oil flow.

1200 rpm / 60 sec per min = 20 rps
4 stroke = 1 pop per 2 rev
20 rps / 2 = 10 pops per second
But I always thought it loped along with my heartbeat or vise versa.

I like to see numbers, so I bought a tach.

Tach on the '95 but not the '02 - was fooling around the other day and seems to me a proper idle is set when the head light no longer dims any when you let it idle - looks to be 1100-1200rpm

When not using a tach, I listen for a comfortable easy idle. If it gets too low it will sound a bit labored.
