I just purchased a low mile 2008 S40.  I am located in northern MN. The previous owner removed many of the features I desire: turn signals, belt guard, rear view mirrors, windshield etc.  So, let the fun begin!  (I owned a 1980"s Savage some years ago)  Remember, dynamite comes in small packages

Speedo cable leak?  There is a rubber seal in the cable end where it attaches to the top of the tranny.  Unthread the fitting to access it.

Thanks, tocsic! I was gonna pour a little ATF in there and turn the crank by hand a few good times since I'll be taking care of the head plug leak anyway. I'm an auto mechanic so a lot carries over to bikes. I had already planned on doing some things like that before ever attempting to start it.

Hi. I'm a new member but have been reading the forums for almost a year.

Last year my bike was stolen (2006 lS650)  

The cops found it  

But returned it in pieces  

It was insured but instead of buying a new bike, which is what I should have done, I decided to restore it myself.  

And that is why I'm here. I have no idea what I'm doing but it sure is a lot of fun.  

Greetings all, here is my intro post!
My bike I've wanted was always the savage, I fell in love with the old air-cooled engined Japanese cycles of the 70s, but the thought of multiple carbs had always scared me a bit.
After I got my endorsement I couldn't find a savage and a 2001 vulcan 750 landed in my lap... So I've had that for the last 8 or so months, through rain, cold, heat, I've put 4,000 miles. In the lady 3 months.
However 2 weeks ago, I 2as on my way to work a block from my house, the rear tire lost traction and laid it down, I was wearing all my gear so mostly unscathed... But my jacket lifted which got me some nice road rash on my stomach.
Anyways, I was on the hunt for an s40 / ls650 /savage.... Yesterday I made a 400 mile round trip in my trusty tdi wagon and picked up a 1998 ls650 for $1600.
It has a Jardine exhaust, an AGM battery, new clutch and some Suzuki branded saddle bags (probably coming off... I love the theory of saddle bags, but never liked the look)
Anyways... Off to dmv on Tuesday to transfer the title and I'll be having some rainy rides for the next few months!    
It was missing the top covers of the engine, but go go gadget ebay and in a few days, I'll have the covers to put back on.
Anyways,im sure I'll have questions soon....
Still deciding if I want to go the tracker/brat style or blue collar bobbers route...

Hi all. Thought it was time for my mid-life crisis and couldn't find a red convertible I liked so thought to myself "there must be some other poor choice I can make", enter a cosmetically neglected mechanically well-loved LS650.
I've always had custom cars but never built a bike, Id always had sports bikes previously (Haven't owned a bike 15 years) so thought "hey I'm building another car in the garage so what I really need is a bike project to sit next to it, yeah that's a brilliant idea"
Gave a call to a friend about his LS I know he hardly rides anymore and the next thing I know the wife is giving me "the look" as I tell her about my latest "to good to pass up deal"
