So what is inside that big stock header.....

....a little stock header.

Through part need and part curiosity I decided to cut open the stock header. I needed to do some major surgery for my cafe build and I had never seen the inside of a double wall pipe. Nothing too unexpected other than the inside pipe struck me as smaller than I had even expected. Here are the pics.

Note that first bend is pretty flat and small on effective diameter.

Reply #1 - 04/07/08 at 03:33:52 Yes, it's pretty tight in there. There's a good photograph on the forum comparing a standard header opening to that of the Raask pipe. The standard ID is just 1.25", not much from about 2" OD, while the Raask is 1.5" ID with 60mm OD, which should be enough for anything but a heavily modified Savage.

Reply #4 - 04/08/08 at 01:28:15 Bluing only really shows really close to the head on the bikes I've seen, close to where there's metal-to-metal heat transfer at the ends of the inner and outer pipes. Without the twin wall, the bluing would be much worse.

Reply #6 - 04/08/08 at 11:04:41 I goobered mine & had to cut it up to get the inner pipe out. I cut it so as to make putting it back together easy. The guy Tig welded it & it looks pretty good. It's not bluing any worse than it already was. On a walk by, the header looks stock, its not even rusting at the welds.

Other then sound do we really get that much benefit out of changing mufflers? I just ordered a jet kit from Lancer so allow a muffler up grade this summer. Now wondering if I should alos hcange the header.

Are you also planning on upgrading the air filter? If you're gonna put a better breathing muffler on, and re-jet, you will also want to add a high performance air filter. I've re-jetted, trimmed the infamous white spacer, adjusted the idle mixture, and put a nice muffler on and WHOA did I get a power boost! I ordered a K & N filter last week but still the UPS man has neglected me. Embarrassed

I can't wait to see how much more hp I get with the filter.

As far as the header pipe, I'd like a new one too, but have had trouble finding an affordable one. I looked at the one from Raask which would be nice, but it's a whole package and it's freakin' $700! Sorry Raask, it ain't worth that much to me.

The answer is yes in theory, because that standard header is a bad restriction.
Problem is, nobody seems to make an upgraded header for the Savage unless you pay to have a one-off made by a custom shop ($$$).
There's a recent thread on Marketplace about it.
