Reply #16 - 04/18/08 at 21:32:10 I use a Kryptonite disc lock that I've had for 15 years. When I bought the bike, the guy didn't have the fork lock key (of course), and he only had one ignition key. I doubt anybody would steal this bike, but you never know these days.

i install bike alarms the local harley suzuki dealer sells...

i love my job. but seriously a bike alarm? something goes off when someone is stealing your bike?
what a waste

if someone really wants your ride they will take it.. whether it be loading it into an el camino, alarm blaring... or cut the chain and then loading it into the el camino.

i think a chain is your best protection though..

Seriously though, the alarm I got is a cheap, small, simple to install deterrent. Nothing makes a bike theft proof. I just try to make it less tempting. In many cases, it only has to be less tempting than the next bike.

Seriously, if someone wants your bike they'll take it. The object is to make your bike less wanted than the one next to it. And really, some 10 speeds are worth more than my bike. But not to me! If a piercing alarm devalues your bike enough to make it not wanted even by the lowest of low, then I'd get one.
But security is peace of mine, it does rattle mine to park it, pull the key and walk away knowing any four fools can throw it in the back of a truck and go. Angry

I use 1/4 inch steel cable, attached to a "Club" lock that goes high on the frame. By mounting the lock high, I reduce the odds that it can be beaten with a hammer or pried with a bar. I park in a public lot all day - it's near a beach and a museum with plenty of foot trafic and security cameras (yay big brother!).

A professional thief with the right tools will not be denied, but any lock/chain combo should discourage wannabe crooks.

My biggest concern is children playing on the machine while I'm at work. I'm concerned that it can tip over and injure someone. Yes the bike would also be damaged, but I can fix that - and have fun doing it. The un-fun part is that there could be some 10 year old boy with a cast on his leg all summer long - that would SUCK! I should do something.

Several times I've returned to the bike to find a) turn signals engaged; b) kill switch engaged; c) high beams; d) bike is in 5th gear.

I'm currently thinking ways to better stabilize the bike to prevent injury to naughty children who like to sit on motorcycles. They are one of us

Reply #23 - 04/19/08 at 09:57:12 My new (to me) Savage is parked either in my garage behind a 140 pound rotweiller/mastiff cross, or about ten feet from my desk on the other side of a window (I'm drooling over it even as I write ), about a half-block from the Sheriff's office, which uses our driveway as a back entrance. I think that it's reasonably secure.

I don't have a garage at my apartment so I use:
a thick plastic covered cable (harder to cut) with a contractor masterlock (solid piece of metal).
a disk brake lock.
Alarm with two way pager. (So I know when something happens).
Fork Lock.
Cover (as long as it hasn't been raining, I'm afraid of mold and mildew)

I don't live in the best part of town. Every car in the lot was broken into and vandalized untill they got to mine. When the alarm went off and the light in the window came on they scattered.

Ohio State has motorcycle parking spots all over campus in visible areas close to class buildings. I've never had a problem there. Most of the time forget to turn the alarm on.

You could say its over kill on my part. I just say I'm paranoid. This is my only form of transpo.

At home at night the Thumper is locked in the garage. At work it is under a camera and I lock the forks. At Wally-World I lock the forks. The only time I leave the keys in it, is when we (PGR) are on a "mission", then there are a lot of HDs and large touring bikes there, so I don't think anyone would be interested in a 4K bike.
One thing I never leave on the bike is the "brain bucket" (once again, except on a PGR mission). Here in Mississippi there is a helmet law, and I couldn't go any place without it.

What about motels? Do you all take locks with you then? My nutty best friend who used to ride, insists I have to get a ground floor room and haul it in the room. ?????

I said she was nuts. But I do have to travel this summer and will be staying in motels and I'm a little nervous about someone making off with it in the middle of the night.
