The manager will throw you out most likely.

get a cable lock and secure it to a post or something.

get an alarm will ease your mind about watching it all the time.

On my OKC trip I had about six feet of chain and a padlock.  Chain has a ring on the end so you can pass the chain around something, thru the ring, snug it down, and lock the other end to the bike.  Always chain around something that you cannot lift the chain off (fire hydraunt bad!.)  On the bike end the chain went thru the front wheel and the frame.

Usually locked up right outside the door.  The one night I had a second floor room I wheeled the outside staircase and chained to that.

You cannot stop a professional thief.  When my GS450 was stolen a witness said he unlocked the forks, hopped on, put a key in the ignition and rode off.  You can stop the joyriders and the semi-pros.

As someone else said -- it is not so much securing the bike as making other bikes to be easier targets.  About the only thing worth stealing on a Savage are the side covers -- those things fetch huge prices.

would a U lock through the front rim and key out of ignition be sufficient for parking outside of apartment complex every night?  Near UF campus, descent neighborhood, all kids...

If you can get a Ulock big enough go for it.  Frame instead of rim is your best bet though if that's all you're going to do.
