squeaky muffler
04/20/08 at 19:15:29
I just bought a 2006 s40 about six weeks ago. I have noticed a squeaky noice that sounds like it is coming from the muffler. I was just wondering before I shell out the money on a new muffler if this is normal. My previous bikes were a virago and a kawasaki, I never hear this before.

Before shelling out new money for a new muffler, I would make sure that all of the mounting bolts are in place and tight. It could be as simple as the muffler is loose and moving. Do you get any backfire?

Yes, it does backfire at times. I was warned about that from the seller. I have checked the bolts and the muffler is tight.

Squeek can be a tiny air leak. I'd check n a cold start up with a candle flame near all the joints including the engine to exhaust one Max

I've never heard of a squeaking muff.
Several things can squeak if they are loose and 2 are notorious for being noisey. The headlight and speedo. Try placing a hand on these and other parts to try and isolate the squeak.

Squeak when running and rev'ing or squeak when going over bumps?????
If on a bounce, then have someone sit on the bike and bounce up & down while you zero in on the noise.
If when rev'ing, do a similar thing, have someone work the throttle when you hunt it down.

It makes the sound when idiling and at low speeds. I have checked all bolts and nuts. The sound sounds like it is coming from the exhaust of the muffler. I was afraid it may be a head gasket, but I really think the noise is coming from the muffler.

I posted something similar to yours on 4/9/08. Take a look at "Engine Noise" for other options. One way to check an exhaust leak is to disconnect the spark plug. You then spray all the joints with soapy water. Crank the engine over and look for bubbles.
I took the upper head off and changed the Timing belt. The chain was worn to limits. This wasn't the cause of my engine noise as suggested. However, it was still due to be changed.
I inspected the cam and noticed some discoloration in one of the cam journals. The seat in the lower head showed signs of abrasion. Just as if someone scuffed it with light sand paper. This is were I believe my engine squeak is coming from.
The only long term solution is to replace the Lower and upper head, along with the cam. My bike is a 2202, so that would not be cost effective for me.
Hope this helps

My bike is 2002. Maybe by 2202, they'll get it right.

i have an o7' and with the frequent back-firing a piece on the back of the pipe got lose.... it made the same squeak you are talking about, it was a small air leak.
i took it back to the dealer i bought it from and said fix it because it was still under warranty. Instead of putting a new stock pipe on it i politely asked for a jardine rumbler
free new exhaust!!! PS it sounds great.... besides the thumper back-fire

I took it to the dealer and had it checked. It was the same problem that jomiyo had with his muffler. The bike is no longer under warranty but I have decided to put on the Jardine. Thanks for all the replys.
