if you broke the savage down, how much space do you think it would take all boxed up?

Measure the lenght of the frame from the neck to where it ends under the seat.  For Height, measure from the top of the neck to the frame under the engine. Then for width, measure forks, tank and rear swing arm and add together. That probably close to what you would need. Remember that some padding will be needed.

Now, if you're shipping the bike, that's not the cheapest way.  There are companies the will transport the bike.  That means that you don't have to do all the un-assembly and re-assembly & tuning work.  Some companies have truck that go up & down the country and all it does is tranport bikes, boats etc etc.   Other companies will palletize the bike so a fork lift can move it.   Looks at eBayMotors and many of the ad's have info or website links.

The Savage is aluminum, steel, rubber, minor amounts of glass, plastic, fabric, copper, etc..   The steel is more dense than aluminum, the other stuff less dense.   Aluminum is 175 pounds per cubic foot -- four cubic feet of solid aluminum is 700 poiunds, about double the weight of a Savage.  I would guess that you could compress the Savage down to a 20" x 20" x 20" cube.  (Sort of like they did it Continental in Goldfinger -- only much smaller.)

lol

Im going back home over the summer and there might be some school chums driving back home.  Shipping is wayyyy too expensive for 3 months of riding.  Paying 50 bucks for someone to carry a load of boxes each way sounds much better to me, but I need to know whether that's even remotely reasonable

Remember, tear down would take a week of after classes work which would be the time you should be cramming for finals.

then, figure a week or two to get it back together and adjusted.

Or.....  Box up you other stuff & either store it or ship home, then after finals, ride home.    See some of the country....  maybe stop in and raid some forum members frig's.....

"Windy City Boy on the West Coast Beach"(Chicago & Los Angeles, near enough)
The Shaky City to the Windy City is about 2,000 miles -- about 30 hours saddle time.

I've seen his bike.  It is a great city beater, but I wouldn't trust it to run 2K miles at 65 mph.

But if we're talking a month plus summer break it would be fun to take a two week two lane cross country....

Talk them into getting a small trailer and take the bike with you.  Small trailers are extremely handy to have, they can load it and same room inside the car, and your bike will be capable of going to get a spare part or whatever if they break down.  (Whenever you want something explain the benifits for the other party.)
