TDC and mis-fire
04/22/08 at 21:42:14

I know that i am at TDC because i am watching the valves and watching my screw driver that is in the spark plug hole, but at TDC i cannot check my decomp solenoid. another 360 degrees and the decomp solenoid moves freely. at the point where the cable is able to be moved the exhaust valve is open and just starting to close. why am i unable to check my decomp solenoid at TDC?

is the last valve to move the intake?

if not, you're at the wrong TDC.

yes, TDC is between the intake valves moving and the exhaust valves moving.

OK, assuming you found TDC correctly... clymer says 11. Pull up on the actuator lever assembly (A, Figure 70) and check the end length of the shaft. The actuator shaft should move out of the body 3-5 mm (0.12-0.20 in.). This amount of free play is necessary for the decompressor to operate correctly.

A is the lever where the cable attaches to on the left side.  The actuator shaft is under a little rubber cup on the right side.

Reread your 1st post and oooh chills.

What brings you to this point?  Bike running poorly?

Three possibilities, one, the shaft on the actuator is rotated, two (shudder) you have adjusted your valves incorrectly, and it's sitting up to high.  Three, the valve is pounding it way to heaven, sitting way up to high.

So either the valve is too high or the actuator is too low.

check please, I'm outta here   Shocked

the bike has not been running poorly but the valves were tapping a bit so i decided to check the clearance.

You ARE at the wrong TDC.

This is the postion that the valves "overlap" , meaning end of the outlet stroke and start of the inlet stroke. Another 360 degr. and both valves are closed and your in TDC compression stroke.
Assuming you turn the crankshaft in the same direction of rotation as the wheels do ( CCW seen from the LH side) NOT as per CLYMERS direction of rotation.

went another 360 and the cable moves freely but now there is no play in the rocker arms. Does this mean that i am at TDC and my valves need some serious adjusting or am i still not at TDC?

as i understood it the compression stroke occurs after the intake (rear) valves are open and before the exhaust(front) valves are open. So the intake rockers go down and the piston goes down at the same time then the rockers go back up closing the valves and the piston starts back up on the compression stroke. well if this is the case then at TDC there is no clearance for the decomp solenoid cable to move.

Put your thumb on the sparkplug, rotate the crank on COUNTERCLOCKWISE (same rotation as front wheel), when it starts hissing (escaping air) past your thumb you are on the compression stroke and approaching TDC. Wink

Compare against the intake, don't know if it true but I think they are similar.

Are the adjustment screws different?

well after loosening the rocker arms and giving her another spin round i finally got the decomp cable adjusted and the valves adjusted in that order. However, i got her pinned back together and took her out for an evening ride, when she started to mis-fire. Its pretty bad, she is not running to good at all. It sounds like it is about to run out of gas but i know that the tank is full.
