I got just in from a ride through farm country in the dark. Riding down a long hill with my brights on and saw the other end in the distance, and opened her up. I was doing around 45mph in 4th gear (1987 only has 4) when I hit WOT. Usually a tight hit with this bike, but sensed a bit of clutch slip there. Maybe riding 2-up was a bit much. I'll have to take a morning solo run on the highway when I wake up to see if it was the extra weight. But yeah, I open it up quite a bit but never timed myself. Don't own a watch.

i tried the 40-70 thing today and counted about 9 seconds. it wasnt too accurate because i didnt have a stop watch i just used the one-one-thousand counting method. this was in 5th gear.

I gave it a try today on my way home from work. I started at 40mph on a flat section of highway with no traffic. Checked the watch and hit the throttle. When I reached 70 I checked the watch again and 12 seconds had ticked off. I'm sure there was a slight delay from the time I checked the watch to the time I hit the throttle, also a slight delay from seeing 70mph to checking watch again. So I'm guessing slightly less than 12 seconds. I was gonna try the stopwatch feature on my watch buy I'm sure I would have crashed trying.

I haven't done 40 - 70, but I did do 50 - 80 with a cement hauler that decided it would be fun to crowd my lane and force me to gear down. I suppose he thought I was on a little 250. His mouth was open when I passed him, he still gunned that diesel and tried to cut me off. Idiot.

If I was gonna do it I would likely start off & just start uop thru the gears & try to click the watch "On" when I hit 40 & just keep on running hard to 70. Would that be a fair comparison? I that what you are doing? I just dont believe theres 12 seconds on there, might be, but now I have to find out..

Is that fourth or fifth on your bike Bill? I can't remember what year you ride. I don't wear a watch, but if I can figure out a way to time it without killing a bus load of nuns, I'll try it today. Mine is a four speed. I suspect we should see lower times with the four speeds, but haven't ridden a five speed and don't know how much difference there is.

Just tried the same thing on a clear stretch of fresh blacktop county road. Running stock with a fresh oil change an ounce of sea foam in the gas tank and about 30lbs of groceries on the bike (of course, I'm only 160). Tried it starting in 4th and then 5th. Same result. Almost exactly 12 seconds.

Should be quicker than that. I've a magazine test from 1986 where 45 to 70 mph top gear roll on was 5.6 seconds. Couldn't find a similar figure for my SV but 60 to 80 was 3.9 seconds and 40 to 60 mph 3.27 seconds - Cycle World magazine May 1999.

I'd buy the 45 to 70 in 5.6 seconds on an 86. I haven't tried it yet. Keep forgetting. But if it takes my bike 12 seconds from 45 to 70 in fourth (my high gear) I'll be surprised.
40
to 70, though, hmmm... That's awfully low speed in that gear, so I'll bet it takes awhile to get moving.
