Sorry its so long, Anyhow I wanted to see if anyone has tried this on their bike as an accurate gas gauge? I dont mind the 100 mile fill up technique but wouldnt mind making it simpler if possible.

Reply #1 - 07/28/08 at 15:37:04 doesnt look simple to me.. youd have to drill the tank to mount the float get a wire(or two) from there to the gauge.. 3 digit luggage type combo is my simple solution.cept i gotta put my reading glass on to read it and the od..

Reply #2 - 07/28/08 at 15:53:01 A crayon on the gas tank will work in a pinch for a reminder Looks like you will need to drill a big hole in the top of the tank to mount it. Then you will have the wires running all over the top of the tank.

No. I bought that gauge and float for a car tank and the float's action would be jammed in the curved confines of the Savage tank. Furthermore, the mounting flange requires a large hole on the tank, and the flange around that hole has to be drilled with mounting holes. Impossible on the Savage tank.

A buddy of mine has been using a marked plastic tube on his cycle tanks, for years, and it is what I use. You take a piece of rigid plastic, solvent proof tubing, and mark it for every quarter of the tank. The only way to do this accurately is to empty the tank, and fill a gas can to exactly the gallon capacity of your bike tank using the gas station pump's digital read-out as your guide. Then you do the math and pour exactly 1/4 of the gas can into a container, and then that into your cycle tank. Then you dip the plastic tube in the tank, and notch it where the gas line is. You repeat this procedure until you've emptied the gas can. The result is 4 marks on the tube, each accurately showing the gas level.

Although you have to stop the bike and take off the cap to check the gas level with your tube, it beats guessing with your eye. And the tube is easy to duplicate and keep on the bike.

Thanks for the replies guys I was wondering if it would work on our bikes but apparently not. :'( I will probably end up buying a bicycle pedometer to help me keep up with the mileage and time. Good idea on the plastic tube though Gort. I swear you guys are the most creative group of people I have ever seen when it comes to bike mods. I wouldnt be surprised to see a show on discovery chan. titled Savage Biker build off. Hummm not a bad idea

I use a crayon I, um, borrowed from the household crayon box. You can see my chicken scratchings here http://www.jaskowiak.cc/S40/s40_3k.jpg at the top of the speedo. I've never had an issue with it.
