consuming oil with a vengence

2 days ago I topped off my oil and took about 150mi ride with average speed around 60mph. Yesterday i rode another 230mi with a buddy of mine again with an average speed of 60mph. I checked my oil today and it was at the low oil mark. Topped it off with 400ml of oil. Theres no funny sounds, smells, or smoke. No visible oil leaks. Seems like an excessive consumption of oil. My regular rides are about 50-100mi a day but at varying speeds, usually between 30-40mph and I only top the oil off a bit every couple weeks with no issues. Do i have an issue? What might it be conisdering theres no signs of leaking or burning?

I use the choke only for about 30 seconds on start up. After about 30 seconds with the choke it actually start slowing down and chugging as opposed to thumping so i turn it off. Now about 12500 mi.

I change my oil every 500 miles and I don't use a drop,I get the same oil out as I put in,I'm at 13000 miles on a 02. try draining you breather tube ,see how much comes out. Seems to me you are leaking rather than using,find it ,fix it.

The bike's a former east German bitsa, 93 or 94 engine on a 1991 frame and exact total mileage unknown (at least 80000 kms). Compression's quite good so it's prolly shot valve seals.

I wouldn't want to steal this thread but...

Yesterday I tok the bike,m which I thought to be without much oil in the sumo, and looked through the little view window.
Nothing - pitch black. Assuming this meant there was no oil, I topped up, little by little, until I eventually realized I was topping up a good three pints (!!!)

Topday the bike started but is very lazy.

She will NOT rev beyond 4000 rpm (I have a tach) and sounds... thicker than usual.

Upon arrival, she was "smoking" oil vapors everywhere, I almost thought she was going to catch fire.

After some two hours I had an easy ounce pooled under the engine.

OK... have I overfilled? Is the piston laboring because of excessive crankcase pressure?

Can I make it home (I guess so...)

I plan to emty the cranckcase, measure the oil and refill two liters...

But, how can I clean the viewing window ? Embarrassed

My Savage used about 100ml every 1000 miles. Lately it has been closer to 400ml every 1000 miles. I think your oil consumption is pretty much normal.

I had an old Ford pickup that would use a quart of oil every 1000 miles. Took it to every mechanic I could find and they told me not to worry. All engines use some oil. Some more than others.

Check the little tube under the bike. The one with a cap on it that goes into the bottom of the air box. Noite: have a pan under it..... trust me....

On a side note, I went on an hour ride. A few hours after I got back I checked the oil level. It was just below the low mark... Shocked

First time in the year since the rebuild. So, I topped it up to the fill line. After a day or two of comuting to work, I checked it again. It was high, at around the top of the sight glass... Shocked

. So.... where did the oil disappear to and then reappear back from.....the twilight zone?? Huh

Yea... there is suppose to be a tube/hose to drain the oil condensate from the crankcase breather tube. The breather tube comes in on the carb side of the air filter so the tube should also be there. When I did mine shortly after I got the bike, I got a few onces out (maybe 2 shot glasses full.... ). That was a year ago..... I guess I shoudl re-check....

The first time I had done that and I have had the bike going on three years now. You wouldn't believe the mess that came out of it. I was dang near sick.

I bet you a dollar to a donut that you have way over filled your engine oil, the window was not black from dirt ,it's black from dirty oil,the window didn't show a line because the oil is to high,drain it asap refill with 2 and a bit quarts,lets hope you haven't done to much damage.

I have seen the level change. That's why it drives me nutz.

Seems after it's hot the level is higher. But when I change it, I start with a US Quart, then a little at a time until it is at the levels.

The book says 1.9 quarts without a filter change.

There is no way that much goes in. I drain about 1.3 quarts when I change it.

I would appreciate any advice on the right way to do it.

I've had the same thing happen to me. Now I use a carpenters level when I check the engine oil. Just a little bit of sway too much either way makes a huge difference in the sight glass. Too bad. At first I thought that maybe the Savage was gonna can solve the oil crisis!
