I've had the same thing happen to me. Now I use a carpenters level when I check the engine oil. Just a little bit of sway too much either way makes a huge difference in the sight glass. Too bad. At first I thought that maybe the Savage was gonna can solve the oil crisis!

I use the same block of wood all the time. It doesn't make the bike perfectly level but it's at the point that I keep my hand on the bike so it doesn't tip.

Always change the filter when you change the oil otherwise you are mixing old and new,or dirty with clean, you don't put on dirty skivies after a shower do you?.

I think my craziness is due to "not a level surface". The bike is stock. No nothing, not even a gas gage Peace brothers.

You can never get out all of the old oil. There is a little pool in the head you can't drain, for one thing. There are always little nooks and crannies with oil in them, as well as the oil that sticks to every surface in the engine. Besides, as soon as you start the engine, the oil starts to become "dirty" again anyway.

Changing oil by mileage isn't really a very good way to do it. But it is the best we have, since the motorcycle isn't fitted with a hour meter. Running the motorcycle on the highway is the easiest on oil, because the machine gets hot enough to evaporate out the water produced by burning gasoline. And the high speed provides plenty of airflow so the engine doesn't get too hot. Running it in town on short trips is worst. The highway will result in fairly low hours for the mileage interval, while city driving gives a lot of time for the mileage.

I used to drive a semi. The company didn't change oil based on either mileage or engine time. They changed oil based on fuel burned. When the truck had burned a certain amount of fuel they notified me to have the oil changed. They knew the fuel consumption, because I used a company card to buy it and they kept track. In case you are curious, it was about 3000 gallons of fuel burned, and ran in the area of 20,000 miles.

Yup, 6 miles per gallon. I was driving a 1999 Freightliner Classic with a Detroit Diesel 12.7 liter engine, derated to 375 horsepower. If I had managed to average (I think) 6.1 mpg I would have earned a small bonus. If I had chosen to shut off the engine when I slept (and slept in the cold) I might just have managed it. Their estimate was that the engine burned a gallon per hour idling. It seems to me the engine held something like five gallons of oil, and the difference between FULL and ADD on the dipstick was one gallon. They issued oil to us in gallon containers. My truck usually used one gallon a bit over halfway into the oil change interval. I don't know what brand they used, but I believe it was 15W-40.
