I think it's the sound of the engine taking a deep breath. Last I heard it was about 10 years ago.....
Wendy and I were in separate cars going home, stopped at a light. I was right lane in the '78 LTD with it's 460/C6, Wendy is in the center in The Beast, and some poor soul is on the left in a 3rd gen IROC Camaro. With his girlfriend. heh.
Green light, I step out smartly, IROC is even with me. I open up as does the IROC. I cannot take him, but his shiny white IROC couldn't shake a ugly cream yellow barge. Meanwhile, back in the center lane, Wendy watches the two of us pull ahead. She gives her Beast a little more gas and we pull further ahead. It dawns on her, "those suckers are
RACING!" She floors it and there was that sound you remember, a moan / drone / snarly mix of the gasses through the Holley and out the Hedman's. Only lasted a second or two as she blew past us doing about 80.
In a 35 zone. *SIGH* At least I backed off at 50!
which was about when she humiliated the two of usI think that sound is
FREE BREATHING, both in and out.
