Do you guys use the choke/Am I running too rich?

So I'm still very new to this bike, and haven't learned it completely yet... but for the last 3 mornings for the hell of it I've just tried starting it without using the choke, and it's fired right up and ran normal right away. It's almost like an FI bike.. The other two bikes I've owned have been touchy to start and using the choke was a must. It's really kind of nice.

BUT. This, and a couple other hints lead me to believe my bike may be running too rich.

Compared to the other two bikes I've owned (however both were I-4 sportbikes) this one is really smelly. When I turn it off and get off of it I can always smell the burnt gas/ 4 stroke smell. I never really smelled anything with my other bikes.

Also, a couple times when I've tried to really run it through the gears, it seems that it's almost bogging a little bit- like it's getting too much fuel. It hesitates slightly sometimes and gargles a little. But honestly for the most part she runs great.

Is my bike running too rich? If so, should I lean it out a bit or is it running about normal for it being the warm-sticky part of summer? I don't think there is any reason to be too concerned, but I'm just curious. I know a lot of you guys play with the carbs quite a bit, so I figrued you'd be able to steer me in the right direction. Thanks in advance!

What year is the bike????

Best way to tell if you're running rich is to look at the sparkplug.......  Have you done that yet????

It's a 96 with 13k on it. I have a spare spark plug too, maybe I'll pull the current one out and replace it... Then check it after a few rides. I still have to check the cam chain tensioner thing too.

Black soot on the brake lever?
Clean air filter?
Fuel mileage?
Rich could be just at idle, but the boggy throttle response would be the issue.

Black soot on the brake lever?
Hope that is the back brake lever.....
-=- have that

Clean air filter?
-=- have to look when I get home

Fuel mileage?
-=- about 50ish

Have a bit of a boggy throttle response and a header going from yellow to gold/brown by the ride....

I start the bike without the choke with no real issue I thought, but I am doing Lancer's jet kit and white spacer mod soon. Also adding a Screamin Eagle Dyna muffler...

Wondering how high the jets are going to have to go????? How come I have a feeling this is going to be fun  Huh

Baby, we are going to need more vodka ( can't drink beer)

Just FYI, I had my Savage tuned so it ran very well, and it didn't need much choke except in the winter and even then compared to my other MC's it needed very little. If it was above 80 degF, I wouldn't use any choke on the Savage.

I rarely use full choke, mostly just the 1st knotch to pick up the idle speed.
simple rule of thumb on the jet size (the tech posts by lancer et al. are much better) WOT will show you if the main is correct.  Find yourself a long grade that you can use WOT for an extended period.  If you roll off a bit and you get a little more from the engine then you need to up the main jet a bit.  Adjust the white spacer for mid range response and if you're out more than 3 turns on the idle mixture screw, then go up to the next size.

I rarely / never have to use the choke on my Savage.  When I do, it doesn't seem to make much difference anyway.
