tire damage question
08/22/08 at 21:42:45

I must've ran over something in the road and my front tire has 3 cuts(splits?)about 3/4 inches  long and an inch or 2 apart. The cuts go from the right sidewall to the center of the tire. Don't know how deep they are ,but I'm not losing any air. Is it safe to ride - for awhile anyway?

VARGAS!!!!!  That tire is all you got holding you up off the road!!
Tires flex, expand and contract depending on heat and stress. Those factors will open the splits in your tire, and then the tube may bulge out or pinch.  C'mon man, your life is worth more than $100.00!

You'd best take it in and have it looked at.

I'd take it off, deflat it, flex the tire and see how deep the cuts are.  If they are to the belts, you'd best replace it.  Check the back too.

I wouldn't be grinding any pegs until they are replaced.

thanks for the replies. someone in a previous thread mentioned kenda challenger tires. I've never seen this kind of damage on a car tire and i was curious if the IRC tires are  a little (weak?) . What  i ran over was pretty much usual road debris, a large  enough stone to make my front tire skip. But that sort of condition seems to be everywhere in this neck of the woods. Oh well, the bike sits in the garage.

I thought the IRC stockers were crap. Once they were replaced, I was sure they were crap, because I then had a decent tire for comparisson. If it was mine, I'd be letting someone look at it & its time to be shopping for a new tire, anyway. Irf someone told me it was okay, I'd ride it while I shop. If they said its not okay, It would be parked while I shop.
