intermittent stalling just started after 40 k

haven't been on here much, mostly been riding and enjoying the savage with a set of Ed's foreward controlls (they're unbelievable).

anyway it started stalling at low speed. sometimes changing to reserve helped(even though i had plenty of gas) and sometimes it would still want to stall with reserve on. it's intermittent though, i rode for 1.5 hours the other day and no stalling but today it stalled regularly both at slow and high speed.
i took apart petcock, seemed fine, plug is fine, but it just feels starved for gas. my friend was behind me today after stalling and he saw lots of black smoke when it started up again.
where to from here ?

Black smoke usually means too much fuel. Maybe the float is sticking open, or the float needle or needle seat may be worn. Or the float itself may be damaged in some way.

When yo restarted it, did you use the choke? Open the throttle? Or leave the throttle closed & just hit the starter?

Franch,

Your problem could be one or more of several things.

Let's eliminate a common source of problems first with a simple test.

Crimp the petcock vacuum line.  Crimp it tightly enough so that nothing can flow through it, not even air.

Put the petcock on PRI.  If the bike runs better, that means you probably have a defective petcock.  You may still have other problems, but the bike will not run right until you deal with the defective petcock.

Happy hunting!
