It's only happened once so far and I've only got about 3 week more riding here in Michigan for this season. It will have to become a recurring problem for me to take it in. If I do, I'll re-post.

thanks,

and i think i figured out the problem. I baught my bike used and found there to be no air filter 3000 miles after i purchased it, i live in texas. Heat, dust, dirty air, all of it being rammed down the throat of my carburetor. and i think it also needs to be re-jetted.

If you don't have a tach, get a mechanic to set the "hot" idle to 1200 rpm.   That means the cold or cool idle will be about 1000.  I have a tach and notice that in cool weather the idle can get to just below 1000 and that's went it has a tendency to stall pulling up to a stop sign fro the first few miles.

is there any retrofitting that must be done for installing a tack?
having one would be incredibly useful. and on a random note, my neutral light went out and i think the sensor inside the trans is either busted/worn out, is it difficult to remove the trans casing and see the sensor or is there more to it than that?

2 days ago it happened to me. I thought I ran out of gas. I was coming to a stop sign so I pulled on the shoulder and switched to the reserve and it started right up. When I pulled away I looked at my odometer and realized that I should have plenty of gas left. I opened it up and sure enough I had gas and about 40 more miles left before reserve. That's the first time it's happened. I bought the bike, a stock '08, in May and have put 3800 miles on it.

I also have an 08 purchased in May.  It doesn't like our cold Canadian weather.  Although not that cold, around 30 to 40 degree temperature, it does not want to run, will stall as if it were flooding.  Add a little choke and the engine will immediately die out.  Appears to be spark plug fouling and needs the plug changed from the #8 to #7 in the heat range for cooler temperatures.  Allow it to idle for a few minutes, the engine becomes hotter and it returns to normal again only to repeat the stalling again as it is ridden in the cold air. I think it wants to hibernate for the winter.

How cold is cold? I've ridden the S40 down to 37 F.  (2.8 C.) without the problem. The day it happened it was probably in the upper 40s (upper 0s?). This weekend I'll be changing my oil and checking the spark plug so I'll see if it looks fouled.

Tach is real easy to install.   Power to the unit & it's light can come from the orange (no stripe) wire under the tank.  Signal comes from the coil at the front of the tank left side (black wire w/stripe), and ground can be the screw that holds the coil on.

I started a thread in the tech section for tach's that work.

Here's mine...

Mine has been doing the same thing. Can't get it fixed right now so I've been running it on prime and it's not happened again. I'm hoping with this other bike in the garage I can get my fixed and still have a motorcycle to ride while they are working on it.
