anyway...being it was 63 degrees here today! I took advantage of it and went for a nice long ride. I kept running into a problem. I would be driving along in 5th, hit the gas and pull on the clutch. After I would do that, the bike would drop revs and shut off. It happened to me like 3 times. on the 3rd time I pulled over and messed with the air/fuel mix screw. I turned it more rich. I tried to create the problem again and I couldn't. So I think I fixed the problem...maybe? Would having a too lean mix cause the bike to shut off after a fast rev to no load from disengaging the clutch? I dont know too much about tuning the bike so since I re-jetted and got a dyna muffler, I brought a small screw driver with me. (thankfully) I hope this is the case.

Btw, I did have the screw all the way in (not today)and i've been backing it out slowly to try to tune it as I have the bike running more and more.

Also....AWESOME FRIGGING DAY TO RIDE!

If you have it set at 1000rpm idle and do as you say, it could easily drop to 8 or 900 and quit on you. I think it does it cause it's a fairly large carb and at low rpms the air flow isn't constant enough to keep a good air/fuel ratio.

You could always blip the throttle a few times or hold it slightly open, to keep it alive at higher speeds.
Seems mine was pretty sensitive to droping to idle from high speeds till I jacked the idle up. I know it would die if I I was running 80 & just let off the throttle & pulled in the clutch.Not so bad about it now, OR, I just developed habits that keep it from happening.

Yeah, I've seen this on both mine ('01) and my moms ('98). When tuned perfectly and fully warmed up, runs great. While warming up or cold outside, tends to die at idle. I now have both idling just a tad high (by ear, no tach) when fully warm and they don't die at all.

Any possible harm from running ~100rpm (1/16 to 1/8 turn on thumbscrew) higher idle?

If nothing else works to fix your problem, you can try this:

Clamp the petcock vacuum line shut. Set petcock to PRI. If the bike runs better this way, I would suspect a problem with the vacuum line or the petcock diaphragm.

I am going to give a higher idle a shot. It's also the 1st time I really ran the bike "hard" since oct/nov. I also need to do an oil change soon. Just need to get around to that.
