How long are the metal plugs inside the stock drag bar that are used to dampen vibration?

I've drilled about an 1 1/4" into them and tapped them for bar end mirror bolts. I wonder how far I'd need to drill to go all the way through them to run some internal wiring? I'm sure I've got everyone stumped with this question. Some probably don't know they are even there. But maybe somebody knows.

Reply #1 - 02/11/09 at 11:21:24 I think if you look closely, you'll see weld marks on the outside of the bar about 4" apart. So 4 to 5" long would be my guess. If you want to run wiring, I think it would be better to start with a hollow bar and fill it after with lead shot.

I'll just have to do the straight bar with a threaded rod through it instead.

Reply #4 - 02/11/09 at 21:50:18 I'm gonna grind the welds, remove the steel plugs (which I've already tapped for a 5/16" bolts), and install them in the broomstick drag bar. I'll make a small channel along the the length of the plugs to accommodate turn signal wires before I put them in permanently.

Why not just make a new set of weights?

Here's how they weld those in. They drill 2 holes thru the bar. Then slip in the weight. Then weld the hole closed. I've used this technique at work.

You'll probably have to drill out the weld with a 3/8 or 1/2" drill bit. That's a pretty big hole to leave in those bars. Count on them being trash afterwards.
