I have started taking my rear wheel off and have run into a problem removing drive belt from the driven sprocket. I have loosened the adjuster nut and bolts on both sides in order to move the wheel forward to give me some slack in order to remove the belt, but the wheel will not be moved forward. I am thinking I will have to remove the drive pulley in order to gain the slack needed. Am I correct in this? I have disconnected the rear brake as stated in Clymer's and will I have to reconnect this in order to apply the brakes and loosen the Drive Pulley bolt? What size is the Drive pulley bolt, it looks like about 30mm. Since I am working on the bike, an 1986, I have thought that I would touch up the black paint. Is their a code for the 1986 black paint?

If you are going to pull the engine then you can leave the pulley and belt on the engine. Take the covers off and the shock on that side. You should be able to push the wheel forward with the adjusters and axle loose. Maybe loosen them some more.

If you want to take the belt off the engine, put it all back together that pulley nut should be a tight MF. Put the front wheel against something, put in 1st gear, have some one sit on it and hold the brake. rear brake dummy. Didn't have to try this but bet it would work, get a long tie down strap, take cinch off of one end, place the hook on 1 of the engine bolts in front, run the strap under the rear wheel over the top and back under again. There you have it, an old fashion strap brake.

Thanks for advise for securing bike, I built the wheel wrack suggested by Savage Gregg and it stabilized everything. DocNeedles

It caught me the first time I took the wheel off, and front end dove down. Nothing happened, but it was an unpeleasant surprise. Whatever you do on it, make sure it's secured tight.

I had noticed the bike was wobbly with just the motorcycle jack under the base of the motor, so the front stand helped. I also put another jack just forward of the rear wheel which has helped. I did have to steady it a few times before getting all of this in place.
