Since the tank's off anyway...

While I have the tank off for painting, I thought I might do a little maintenance anyways. Since I don't know when the last oil change was, that is a given and I think I will go ahead and replace all the fuel lines as a precautionary measure (& add a clear fuel filter). Any other ideas that I should do while I have her torn apart?
BTW, how much fuel line and what size will I need to pickup before I start?
It's an 05 S40.

It's an 05 with a little over 5k on it, do you really think that's necessary.
I am a bit of a do it yourselfer, but that sounds like it could be a little more in depth than I was planning.
Unless it's not all that difficult to do, I just got my Clymer manual the other day and I know I saw a thread on here about those, but how difficult is it to do?

Adjust valves for sure. I'd pull the cam cover, lube & tighten headbolts or whatever this has, use neverseize on the cam cover screws. do whatever it takes to get the dang speedo stuff to stop rattling. Do the the front of seat lift. Good time to mount twin airhorns instead of the beep beep. Can also mount some night time glow lights to properly look like an alien at night, and be seen better.

5K is time for valve adjust. Just go slow, talk about it, well get you thru.

A couple of dabs of silicone on the 3 springy speedo mounts might prevent a future rattle....
Pull the chrome head covers off and toss'em... easier spark plug access, and looks better anyway...
Have you done a seat lift?... see tech section...

From reading some of the posts, I thought that might be part of a problem.

do you need any special tools to adjust the valves? my bike has about 4300 mi on it, I'm debating taking it in for service or doing it myself, I'd like to do it myself though, I still need to get a torque wrench, I hear harbor freight has a good one for cheap.

I have just under 7k on my bike and my valves didn't move a bit, so I don't know.

10MM end wrench, drop ends is a better wrench, feeler gauge, a 5 gallon bucket of patience. A screwdriver.

A motorcycle mechanic can listen and tell you if you need them adjusted,I wouldn't tear something apart unless it needs to be.

Don't so much need a torque wrecnh if you use common sense... but you will need a set of feeler gauges.... to measure the gap, and a really wide something to use as a screwdriver on the timing plug cover. (see left side of engine near left foot)... I use a fat washer in a vice-grip, old break pads work even better...

Pull the chrome head covers off and toss'em
I wouldn't just tossed,. I'd smash em to bits so they never find their way back on the bike. To have to pull the gas tank to do the spark plug is just plain silly.
Oh yea, theres a thread here to mod the chrome covers. You can access the spark plug w/o lifting off the gas tank should you wish to keep the chrome covers on.

According to the book, your bike should have had the head bolts torqued on two separate occasions so far.
That job is kind of a PITA, however.
