Plug cap/leak question

This may sound dumb but why do you have to TDC if only changing out the plug cap?
Hoping to tackle this today so input would be greatly appreciated.

I didn't TDC mine.....
it sure does seem like an extra step... why mess with the valve train when all you're doing is removing the head cover.....??????

I think it's probably because once someone tears into the engine that far most of the time they go ahead and do a camchain check. That's just my theory anyway.

If you're removing the head cover, you want to unload the valves and rockers so it don't snap up on you when you loosen the bolts.

Does the "valve cover" serve as the cam's upper bearing??? cus if not, nothing is being unloaded by TDCing the motor......

.....
moments later
.....
.....
....
I just looked at a parts catalogue and it SURE does look like the valve cover serves at part of the cam bearing.....
i.e. I was very lucky to not have someing go wrong when i did my plug leak.....
