I have read the 12 step cone filter thread, and I understand how to do that, and that considerable carb rejetting will be necesary. What I do not know is, what has to be done to secure the battery after the air box and side covers are removed, and what is done with the ignition switch? Also, with the carb unsupported from the back, is there a risk of failure at the carb/intake manifold junction - I know this is a problem on the buell blast if you eliminate the airbox. All help appreciated, this is my first "project"

I've been using the cone filter for 10'000 miles (about 2 years) and have no problems.

Removing the airbox does not cause any issues. All other components are self supported. If you just change the filter and not the exhaust you my not need to rejet. Increasing air input without increasing output might not increase the over all flow of the system.

That is correct. The Battery box is held in by four bolts in the bottom of the box, and the ignition switch is held on to a tab right on the frame.

can anyone post the link to the 12 steps? I searched and I see references to it, but no actual thread.
I noticed that on ebay 60mm diameter for custom cone filter inside diameter. KN has filter but it is larger cone.. will larger cone have impact (negative or positive)
Can anyone confirm this is the correct workable filter?

Put a tiny filter on it & strap it pointed up, to the frame.
