Timing chain not properly seated on guide????????? (Read 80 times)

Timing chain not properly seated on guide?????????

Just removed my clutch-cover to inspect my timing chain tensioner. found tensioner is extended 19mm........ only 157XX miles on the 98 savage. I took a closer look at the chain guides and found the chain isn't sitting correctly on the guide closest to clutch. if opportunity arises i'll post a picture. But i don't have a camera A-T-M so it might be a little while. Anyone have an idea as to why this wouuld happen?

I posed earlier of a metallic rubbing noise coming from right side of bike and it happens in the 1.5k-2k rpm range (just above idle).

Do you think this chain and guide issue could be the cause to this noise?

Assistance or ideas are appreciated.

Reply #1 - 04/06/10 at 11:17:23 you're at 19? thats defenitly time to change the tensioner, it might resolve the chain not being seated too... it will tighten it up which might reseat it... and if theres a metalic noise the chain might be knocking at the head.... just my opinion though... Vers will be able to best answer that for you

Reply #2 - 04/06/10 at 11:22:36 When the plunger is fully extended, it flops around abit. This can cause the guide not to be centered on the chain and wear funny. I'd replace the guide and be done with it.

Yes and no, or no and yes depending on your point of view.

The chain does wear a little (known as stretch)
the guides wear a little
causing the plunger to extend beyond the capability of the adjuster to maintain proper alignment. And extend more till the plunger will fall out.

Many here have concluded that it's a failure of design that the adjuster does not have the capacity to deal with the factory allowed stretch.
Of course Suzuki will say it's a failure of the owner to maintain his bike.
