high handle bars
05/24/10 at 15:44:21

What's the deal with people putting really high handle bars on their bikes?  I'm not complaining or anything; I couldn't really care one way or another, I'm just curious as to why people do it.  I saw a guy the other day with his arms stretched out well above his head.  I'd be surprised if he could've reached any higher.  I can't imagine that'd be comfortable.  If anything I'd think his arms would probably fall asleep like that.  I think I can understand most of the other common mods people do to their bikes, but that one still stumps me...   Huh

Maybe they are arm wrestlers like in stalones' movie.
He had a device in the cab of a semi so that he could exercise while driving as a long haul trucker.
Maybe the rider wants to do chin ups while riding.

I believe in Wa the so called legal height is 36". However yes I have seen many bikes whose bars were higher than that.

For what it's worth, my opinion is it would seem to hurt the shoulders and not be good for riding long distances.

I guess if one likes them and the height doesn't bother them than so be it. Just not my cup of tea..

Because drag bars are for drag queens!!!  Kiss

As long as they're not above your shoulders they are very comfortable and actually give you a lot of leverage & control.

Don't knock it til you try it... You might be surprised!

I would not had made my comment had I not ridden a bike with
ape hangers, A friend had them on his old triumph bobber, looked godawfull, but I just had to try, unsafe at any speed.

Depending on the bike, it could be unsafe with ANY bars on it...
One ride don't make you an expert.

Hells bells y'all... Does anything make you happy??

Alot of things make me happy. I didn't realize that voicing or typing my opinion made me seem unhappy.
O could it be the reprucusions of the pain pills I have taken lately?  Wink

Hey if you share, we'll all be a little happier!
I wasn't really directing that question towards you, Kim. I hope you didn't take it that way.
It was just a light hearted question for the grumpies out there. The OP asked about high bars, I gave my opinion. Some like 'em, some don't... I don't know & don't care if it's legal or not, as long as they're not above my shoulders I like 'em!
I've seen bikes with the HUGE apes on them. I agree, it looks uncomfortable & dangerous. Mine are only 10" + risers, mini-apes actually... Very comfy
Let's just try to accept & embrace the many flavors of savage. It doesn't have to be a bash-fest to be different

Well that's great Mick!

See, I don't really like the cafe style bikes. To me, you might as well be riding a modern sport bike with that hard seat and front-leaning-rest-position on the bars. I do appreciate the work that goes into them though! I appreciate anyone who has a vision of their bike and puts in the time & effort to see it through. From one extreme to the other, I like to see them end up unique.
