A while back I noticed my clutch cable had a broken wire.  Maybe I overreacted, but I bought a set of used cables (throttle and clutch) from a fellow member.  They look about new, no frays, broken wires or anything.  I wanted spares just in case.

So, here is my question.

What should I do with them now?  Should I oil them and put them up somewhere?  If one breaks I can almost guarantee it will not be in the backyard and a cable at home will not do me much good.  

I have heard about guys zip tying them on the bike, along side the cable that is there now.  But what about the ends being exposed, all my good oil driping out everywhere and all that bad dust getting in?

So, what do the gurus suggest?

Right now all i've got is a fork bag with basic tools, but on longer trips i take saddle bags and pack them up with more goodies (like spare parts...) for the road.

my bike dying a few blocks from work or home isn't of much concern, I'll still get where i'm going easy enough. but it dying in the middle of a 200 mile trip? yeah, i'd rather not have to deal with that.

that being said, if your current cable has already begun to go, replace it. more of an ease of mind thing, in my opinion
