It was to commemorate the 70th year of the battle of Britain, where the old pilots who fought in the battle(1940) were flown over their old airfields and escorted by a Spitfire and Hurricane.
Fid,my nephew said the two spits were escorting the 787 into Farnbough for the Air show, however your story is also correct.
I have often wondered how many spitfires there are left in the world ?
there is one right here at our air musium, I think the confederate Air Force somewhere in Texas has a few,in fact they used them in the movie "Battle of Britain" only on the condition that the owners flew them thereselves.
