If you don't have a metric caliper use anything to measure, even a crescent wrench. If it is real close to 5/16ths it is an 8mm. Most likely with a 1.50 thread but possibly a 1.25. One is a standard thread and the other is a fine thread. If you have metric open end wrenches use the 8mm one to measure diameter. If the bolt won't slip between the jaws it is probably a 10mm bolt. A little imagination can go a long way to improvise. BTW if you hold a ten mm wrench to it and count the threads between the jaws, a little math will give you the thread pitch. Metric threads for medium size bolts go as 1.0, 1.25, 1.50, 1.75.. That is mm per thread so it is simple math.
