Same stuff as any used vehicle...
Low miles, garage kept, no damage, clear title.
Check rubber for rot or heat checking...
Metal for rust...
Paint for damage or fade...
Flip all the switches...
Start it cold and listen for weird noises...'
Put your hand at the end of the muffler and look for oil spit, fuel, or moisture...
Leaks..
Bodywork repair...
Feel fork tubes for oil weep...
Tread...
Feel brake rotors for gouging...
Check VIN with title...

In 2004 the Sportster went "Rubber Mounted Motor".
If you get one made befor that it will vibrate you tittys off about 65 mph and faster.
In 2006 they went fuel injected.
Also in 2004 and newer there are a few extra Horses to play with. and 500 more RPM to redline .
The Roadster has Mag wheel -- the custom has spoke
The Roadster has duel disk up front the Custom single
The Roadster has a Tac.
The Roadster has a seat that is made for long legs and not ridding dubble.-- the Custom has the better seat.
The Custom has Foward mounted peg the Roadster mid mount.
Custom has pullback bars the Roadster has Motorcross bars.
So if ya like spoke wheel and foward pegs get a custom
I make the mistake of getting a Roadster , then had to add the big tank and forward controls and Custom seat.
The Good part I got dual disk, Tac and Mag Wheel. and Trading on E'bay I allmost broke even .
The bad ; the control cables are not long enough to put higher handlebars on it so I'm stuck with Motorcross bars or a lot of money switching the controls. In hindsite I should have got a Custom and put mag wheel on it ---- but the price was right and it runs GREAT!

"WHY???"
There are so many better bikes out there, that are cheaper to maintain and to ride.

Ive seen exactly One guy actually RIDE his Harley. He was running that thing, using the Grunt, pulling away from lights, rolling thru turns & leaning hard, pulling away as much as he could without just actin a fool..
I enjoyed watching..

I know what ya mean ,
If one of them had to go live somewhere else (Sportster or the Savage) the Sportster would have to pack-up .
The Savage is more FUN !

Most Harleys are still on the road today though, most likely because they were too heavy to push back home.

Some approximate but typical "Rear Wheel" horsepower figures for stock bikes (crankshaft numbers are fairy tales).
54 cid Sporty = 45 HP
74 cid Sporty = 52 HP
74 cid (1200S) Sporty = 56 HP
88 cid Glides, etc. = 63 HP

they survived because they are ,or were the only American bike made in the US. they were in there day a decent bike.
But like the Brits who made decent bikes like BSA,Norton,Arial,AJS,Matchless,Vincent, triumph, but they all fell asleep while the japonese took over.
