I personally take the battery out and take the caps off to charge it with a car battery. Since I got a battery tender from Wal Mart I just plug in the pigtail and let it go without taking it out. Their brand is Schaumacher, I think. $20 and works well. BTW the pigtail on my trickler just lays along the top edge of my right side cover. I just dig it out to plug it in.
