Concerning tee-shirts and what not.

If it's too hot for the gear, it's too hot to ride.

One reason people don't wear safety gear is that it's inconvenient. I'm in no way saying that is a good excuse. The Gasolina Spats look like a good solution, but I wouldn't buckle six buckles to run to WalMart for a signal bulb. I bought a pair of cheap pull-on boots so I can kick off my tennis shoes and step into them in a minute. I do wear a mesh Joe Rocket and of course, a helmet and some Wells Lamont mesh and stretch Wal Mart gloves tee and jeans You need to figure out what you will most likely wear on an everyday basis and use it. Something I can put up with may drive you crazy. The old arguments about "everybody's gonna die sometime" and "I can take a little road rash" don't hold up very well when they are picking gravel out a mangled hand that will always hurt when you get milk out of the 'fridge. And I am not worried about my insurance going up because of your wreck. I just want you to live a full happy life with a minimum of pain.  Wink

Some people do not ride for fun.  If I need to do somewhere I have to ride.  "Too hot to ride" is not an option.

The few times that I have fallen, I have been doing between 0 and 5 mph.  Total road rash has been less than a square inch.  I have never crashed.  If I ever felt that I needed to wear "gear" I will get shred my drivers license -- I am no longer capable of safely driving a car or bike.

When I took the safety course, they made an analogy that I still remember.  Your own personal riding style is like climbing a ladder.  The higher you climb on a ladder, the higher the possibility of bigger injury.  But everyone has different limits of acceptable risk.  How many steps you decide to take up the ladder is your own choice.

Paladin, what I mean is, IF you are concerned about your safety enough to wear safety gear, then choose something you can stand. Otherwise you may be tempted to leave it at home. The level of gear used varies with the individual.  Smiley

I think I am getting the idea.  You are willing to climb that ladder.  You are willing to climb higher if you feel you have "gear" so you will not be hurt if you fall.

Problem is, I know that I will be hurt if I fall.  Use of "gear" still means you will be hurt.  On our trip to Rainbow Cafe we saw two motorcyclists that went down, collision or high speed drop.  The gentleman that was hit by a car went in an ambulance.  The man on the sportbike died.  Both were wearing gear.  I am not willing to be hurt.  Gear means you get less pain.  I do not want any.  The day I am not capable to dodge the traffic is the day I stop riding.

Most of you know about my accident back in 2010.
I won't rehash all of that.
I will say, without the gear my injuries would have
been much worse.
Defensive riding is the best protection on a bike.
IMO being in gear adds to the protection level.
I have my old chaps, boots and jacket that shows
the signs of sliding on asphalt.
Much easier and cheaper to replace the gear instead
of my skin.
Again my choice and will stand behind that decision 100%..Smiley kim

No, you guys are making this all wrong. I am 58 yrs old. I have always used a helmet. I don't want to make you wear one. I don't wear gear to go faster. It's like carrying a gun for protection...most will carry a pistol for convenience insted of a shotgun. I was only making the point for those who wear gear that it seems to me we will ATGATT if our gear, however much or however little, is easy to don, comfortable, etc... You guys are around the bend putting out philosophical thought that I do not have. I practice quick maneuvers all the time on open roads. I also practice braking from time to time, again on open roads without traffic. I have told my wife a thousand times to not fixate and slide through a target in the car, but to steer around. And when I no longer have the dexterity or mental acuity to safely ride around bad drivers I too will quit riding, because GEAR OR NO GEAR it hurts and I could be killed. I'm done.  Sad  Not sure acuity is a word, but it sounds good.

And now it's time for

ATGATT
101
MATH

Yes, yes, there are those who say that a helm
is nothing more than an overpriced tupperware
designed to keep your brains in one place so
you can have an open casket service, I, however,
chose to see it diffently.

1. Visit your favorite online or real gear shop and select all
THE BEST, MOST EXPENSIVE bike gear they have.

2. Yup, it's a big investment that you may, thankfully, never even
use, so DON'T buy it quite yet, just write down the amount $.

3. Now go to your local hospital and just ask what the admittace
fee is, and costs per day, surgery and such as... write the
amounts down.

4. Now compare amounts.

5. Now relax, breathe and try not to kill yourself by rushing
back to the store to buy your gear, lol.

...on second thought, fugittaboutit since obamacare
will sureley get you outta your 90° wrong way bent joints.

Just think "The 6 Million Dollar Biker"
