ATGATT

Had a big camping trip coming up so I was getting the camper ready. I noticed a grease fitting missing from the axle. So off to the local autosupply, I went. Well it was very hot that day and I had been on the  bike all day. I thought right before I got on the bike do I really need my jacket with armor. Well a little voice inside me said yeah you better take it.

I was leaving the parts store coming out on to a four lane highway. A vehicle was pulled in the middle turn lane preparing to turn into the parts store. I had a clear opening to pull out going across all lanes of traffic while going behind the vehicle. So I did well as I pulled out and went to turn left I leaned a little too far causing the peg to grab asphalt, and the rear wheel to lose traction. Yup I laid it down rookie mistake. My fault I have scraped the pegs on this bike several times and was still learning that I could not lean it like a standard bike. I found the threshold for how far I could push it and learned my lesson.
So I did a quick assessment of the bike and deemed it rideable and non-reportable as far as an accident goes. I rode the bike home without any problems. The only damage was a bent peg, and scraped end cap on handlebar.

I however had no damage  the armor in the elbows and shoulders saved me from any injury including a bruise or scratch. My jeans saved my legs, and my gloves my hands. I was a little sore on my left side but the gear did its job. Had I ridden without my jacket I would have suffered some road rash.

A week later a friend of mine works an accident where the rider was wearing shorts and a t shirt. Not that bad of an accident, in all actuallity. The rider had muscle showing in the areas that were unprotected. He looked like he had been against a grater, Nasty....

Silly Ogre, glad to hear you and your bike are ok.
Nice your jacket did the job and your skin is all intact..
I am 100% ATGATT rider as well..
This past weekend, highest temps in months.
Lots of riders out, several had tank tops, no
jackets, lil 1/2 helmets.
Guess if you don't have many brains, no reason
to cover them.. Smiley kim

It was a good lesson for me... I learned that I was not 18 anymore and riding a sportbike...I also made enough of an impression that my father has started wearing his armor all the time...I mean the laying it down I am so ashamed of, but it happened...I debated on posting it because of how stupid it was to happen...However I wanted to reinforce that we need to ATGATT...If someone laughs at me that is fine as long a they put the gear on the next time they ride...

I always "suit-up".  I may get some weird looks on the 90-something degree days lately, but a little sweat lost is a small price to pay.

I kringe everytime I see a young couple riding two-up on a crotch-rocket in just short-shorts, tank tops and tennis shoes or flip-flops (no helmet law here).

I tried ATTGAT once but after I had three helmets on (one on my head and one on each knee I didn't know where to put the rest of them and the third riding jacket was very hard to get over the first two.

Glad you're ok SO.

A good 90% of the riders i see around here and on the highway usualy have a helmet, boots, jeans and t-shirt.
Rarely do i see someone with a jacket, sometimes chaps, but thats about it.
The ones i do see rideing in leather are generaly women and/or beginners. You can usualy tell them...lol
The most leather i see most of them wear are the harley riders wearing their vest.

Myself i wear a denim jacket when its oven hot, leather when its cool enough or on the highway. Had road rash once or twice, dont care for it...lol

I just shake my head and a lot of the people I see around here on bikes. They wear no helmet, no gloves, no glasses/goggles,  they have on shorts, tanks tops (or no shirt at all for the guys) and SANDALS!!!  Smiley The chicks on the back will have on flip flops. I am guilty of not wearing a jacket and only wearing a tank top for my shirt on hot days. Embarrassed Luckily for me the worst I have gotten is a few bee stings in places you don't want to have bee stings.  Grin I ALWAYS wear my helmet, gloves, glasses, jeans and boots. Oh, there are a lot of people who wear the little skull cap helmets if they do wear helmets. I want to ask them if they really think that little thin thing is going to help them if they crash.  Huh Glad you are ok and you only bruised your pride a bit.

I have put a bike down while wearing shorts tee and sandals. (just going to the store for a quart of milk, dear). Tore the flesh between my left big toe and second toe, lots of road rash, and I lost a pint of blood standing in a cold shower pulling bits of road out of my arm and leg with tweezers.
Now I always wear jeans and boots. On very hot days I wear a tee and leather vest, or a sleeveless denim jacket. Any other day I wear a leather jacket, and on cooler days I wear chaps as well.
That was 35 years ago and the scars are barely visible now. Grin

Met a friend for a cold one after work yesterday at a local watering hole. He said I looked like winter with my long sleeves, dungarees, and boots. As we were sitting there we heard a loud noise and turned to see a guy on a long chopper pick himself off the street. Shorts, tee shirt, and sandals. Typical South Florida attire. He didn’t quite make the turn at the light.

My buddy looked at me and then looked at the other guy in the street and I could see it all clicked in his head. Later when we were leaving he asked if I ever dropped a bike. I told him sure, but I walked away with nothing more than a busted bike. Sticks and stones will break your bones and road rash really hurts me.

I wear chaps over jeans with steel toed boots to protect the waist down.
I wear a tee shirt with a Dickies welders shirt & gloves & a modular helmet. Unless its cold, then I wear a jacket, too. Ive been told how a regular shirt wont hold up in a crash, but the one I wear already did.

Ive crashed bicycles & had hide peeled off my leg by a sidewalk, I cant believe asphalt grooves would be any less painful, so I dont want me any O that

I'm 90% ATGATT.  Never ride without armor jacket that is yellow in color and my red helmet ( to be seen - I don't get wearing black clothing), gloves, and jeans.

However, I'm not into the boots.  Probably won't get killed from a broken foot or ankle, although I know that boots add a little protection.  I don't like the lack of pressure sensation when shifting or braking that you get with boots.  Back 45 years ago, when I did some amatuer car racing, we wore bowling shoes with driving suits.  The thin shoe soles made it a lot easier to sense pressure on throttle and clutch pedals.

Nuff-said - winter wear

the only difference is no hi-vis chaps in the hot and replace the hi-vis coat with a hi-vis long sleeve shirt - replace the full face with a modualr all white helmet - the gloves, boots and jeans are always there.
