Burned my left leg pretty bad on my exhaust
06/08/11 at 03:51:59

A shower came by about ten days go when I just got home from work. I was already in my shorts and forgot the bike was outside and not in my garage. I usually let it cool down before bringing it in.

Well I moved the bike in the garage and for some stupid reason I leaned over to look on the other side of my bike and the pipe got me pretty bad. It's a second degree burn, about the size of a baseball. I've been taking care of it and I even went to the emergency room last night just to make sure it was ok. The doc told me it looks good and to continue what I have been doing which is letting it get a lot of air, cleaning it constantly and adding a lot of neosporin. He said after ten the days, if I was getting an infection, it would have spread up my leg. The redness has been staying in the area of the burn.

Just wanted everyone to be careful. This thing hurts. I'm usually good with pain but it's more of an annoyance. I always wear jeans when riding. Last night I bought a pair of light motorcycle pants to wear over my pants just to make sure and be safe of course.

When I took the driver course I see why they stressed so much as getting off the left side of the bike instead of the right. But being human, I forgot and got burned for it. Literally.  Embarrassed

OUCH!!!!! Take care of that thing. Burns DO hurt like hell. I always wear jeans when I am on the bike but I have been known to burn my jeans on the exhaust.  Embarrassed I only do it when I stop for gas and I am by myself. When it is just me filling up, I don't actually get off of the bike I just lean over and get the nozzle. I just did that 2 days ago. Embarrassed

Z, please get off your bike to refuel. More that once I've seen riders spill fuel that got on their clothes, & 1 time watched a bike go up in flames when the owner dripped fuel on the exhaust. Watching him trying to get away from the bike was not amusing. Luckily he got away with minor burns to his hands but the bike was a total loss. ATGATT won't help much in that situation. :'(

I still have a scar on my calf from an exhaust burn I got as a youngster climbing down after getting a ride from my Dad on his "newer" Harley.  When we were little, he used to give us rides around the block by having us sit between his legs in front of him.  Dangerous for sure, but times were different back then.  It's a wonder we all survived!  Grin

web, I forgot how much experience you have on motorcycles. You are now nearly a full fledged member. To get the full experience, you need to wreck, so we don't really hold you to that.  Grin I was talking to a friend the other day whose daughter burned her leg (As I said she would when she bought it.) I also told her I can look at her leg and tell what make, year and model it was that made the scar. I started in the mid 60s with a Honda Super Cub scar. I was really quite proud. Anbody else got that inside knee/calf scar? I thought so.  Wink

Funny Boofer. Actually I've been riding since I was 18.  On and off mostly. The wife hated bikes so I never got another one. Whenever i got a itch to ride I'd borrow a friends.

A little update on the burn. Some paranoid people in my life, cough cough parents, begged me to go see a doctor so I went to the emergency room. Everything is cool. The burn is healing fine. The doc said there will be barely any visible scarring.

Webhead, nice to hear the burn is healing.
Those exhaust burns take awhile to heal.
I hadn't had my bike for long when after
washing it, took her for a lil ride to help
dry it off some. Once back home, was
drying some excess water off,
heard a sizzle and realized about
that time my  elbow had touched
the exhaust. OUCH.. I learned
fast how hot that exhaust gets and
just how quick it does.. You should have
seen the look on people's faces when they
found out I got it from the bike.
Legs you hear about, elbows kind of gives
them a reason to raise their eyebrows evidentually.  Shocked kim

I realize that sometimes it seems we have to almost stand on our heads to work on these bikes, but didn't realize anyone actually did / does!  Grin

I wear my burn scar as a badge of honor... kinda like a right of passage thing.  Smiley

It took a month but the burn has finally healed. And like the doctor said no scarring. I woke up to a normal scabless leg this morning. I thought for sure I was going to get a scar since it was a second degree burn. But after 2 tubes of neosporin and just leaving it uncovered most of the time it healed nicely.

Lesson learned. (again)

I was in my garage working on my bike, and started it up to listen to it.
Didn't run it long; but in moving around between my calf and ankle touched the exhaust.  I felt a quick sensation and hopped away.  It didn't hurt, and later was surprised to see the mark it'd left on me.  Just about healed now, and no scar.

Oh my, hope it heals well.

Don't feel silly about burning yourself on a bike muffler......its a given.

Don't believe me, ask anyone who has owned one more than a month,  you will burn yourself.

NO, silly is when you take the baler apart to fix one of the guides/guards (for the um-teenth time Smiley ) and heat the mounting plate with a torch to beat it back into shape, then weld.  Then, once done welding, you cut power to the torch, take it out of the clamp, and as it drops as it should (per Newton and Gravity) you forget and try to catch it with the hand that you were NOT wearing the welding glove on......now THATS silly.

and man did I pay for it. Shocked

God bless you and speed your healing,

Farmer
