Bill -

Your neighbor is a nut, that's apparent.

To a dog, a chain represents slavery and cruelty, while a fence that he can't jump is simply a boundary.

Anyone who chains a dog to anything ought to have to spend at least 2 days tied out to the same chain.

Having raised and bred dogs for nearly 40 years, I do know what I'm talking about here.

I grew up with Pits in England... My family there has had many of them over generations... Staffordshires, Manchesters ,  Bulldogs, and Pits...

I think I know plenty...

Pits today, are competing as pulling dogs... instead of fighting,... and they are amazing at it...
They are bred, as always, for devotion and heart...
The effort is not only to rehabilitate the dogs image,... but, to redirect the focus of many owners, by giving them a new direction to seek prestige through their animal...
The Pit Bull was, during WWI, a national symbol of America and it's military...

I always heard that raw hamburger laced with anti-freeze would take care of it, but don't know that for sure.   Maybe a few laced meatballs might accidentally roll over 3 feet into their yard??? Roll Eyes

Not that I hate dogs or anything, but in the case of those that are extremely aggressive or vicious towards me or my family on our own property, I would consider putting an end to it. Undecided

That old WW I poster is frequently used to claim that pitt bulls ( American Terriers ) are nice.  Well, at about 5 years typical age of a good breeding female, and about 100 years now since that poster, that makes for about 20 generations of breeding since those days, and as much as 30 generations for a puppy mill operation that breeds females as soon as they can..

Unfortunately, far too many breeders of pitts have used those 20 to 30 generations to breed aggressiveness into the animals.

It typically, in the breeding world, only takes about 5 generations to get what you want to stress in your breeding program.

Here in London Ont pitts are required to be muzzled at all times while out of doors. The breed can no longer be owned by a resident, but if you had one when the by-law went into effect you could keep it.

Personally, and I know this idea would never fly, I would require all pitts to be neutered to prevent perservation of the breed, and let the breed go extinct of its own accord.

I'm not cruel enough to demand that they be euthenized, but sterilization of all existing pitts would solve the problem in short order.

not sure i would dose the dog with AF - easily traceable definitely something the dog owner would know whether the dog had expsoure from something on thier property - they immediately suspect the closest neightbor who has already complained of poisoning thier dog.....I am not proposing you roll over and live with it but I am not proposing poisoning either....got to be another solution dont know what it is right now.

... and then, those people would get Rottweilers or Dobermans and do the same...
It's not the dog,.. it's the owner...
Helen Keller's handi-dog was an American Pit... the Little Rascals dog was a Pit... look at pics from 50 or 100 years ago... Same dog.  The owners have changed,... and they will train a Rot, Doby, German Shepard, or any large capable dog to be the same...

Also,.. why does this bunch up yer' drawers so much?...
More children are killed by their own mothers than by any dog.
20,000 people a year are killed by guns...
29 by dogs.... the majority killed by Chows and Rottweilers...
The number 1 dog for serious maiming attacks is the German Shepard...
Quote:
Clifton report (2009)

Mr. Merritt Clifton, editor of Animal People News,[3] has compiled from press reports a log of dog attack deaths and severe bites in the United States and Canada from September 1982 through December 22, 2009. The study methodology counted attacks "by dogs of clearly identified breed type or ancestry, as designated by animal control officers or others with evident expertise, [that] have been kept as pets." Mr. Clifton acknowledges that the log "is by no means a complete list of fatal or otherwise serious dog attacks" since it excludes "dogs whose breed type may be uncertain, ...attacks by police dogs, guard dogs, and dogs trained specifically to fight..."[4]

The study found reports of 345 people killed by dogs over the 27-year period, of which "Chow Chow", or mixes thereof, were reportedly responsible for killing 159, or about 46 percent, of the people killed by dogs in the attacks identified in the study. The breed with the next-highest number of attributed fatalities was the Rottweiler and mixes thereof, with 70 fatalities or about 20 percent of the study-identified fatalities; in aggregate, Chow Chows, German shepards, and mixes thereof were involved in about 66% of the study-identified fatalities. In that same study, the number of serious maimings by a "pit bull terrier" was 778; the number of serious maimings by a Rottweiller was 244. The number of attributed fatalities to the German Shepherd dog was 1. The number of serious maimings by a German Shepherd was 5000.[4]

Mr. Clifton concluded that

"Temperament is not the issue, nor is it even relevant. What is relevant is actuarial risk. If almost any other dog has a bad moment, someone may get bitten, but will not be maimed for life or killed, and the actuarial risk is accordingly reasonable. If a german shepard has a bad moment, often someone is maimed or killed—and that has now created off-the-chart actuarial risk, for which the dogs as well as their victims are paying the price."

No Bill, then you will probably go to prison, and Klotz would lose their spokesperson. I don't know what would be worse.

Jerry - you are so right -, my girl friend kept telling me about Saints..so after we got married, we got a fantastic male...almost 200 lbs as weighed on a truck scale at work.  10 of the most wonderful years of my life.  He was always so gentle..except the one time hiking in Western Mass section of the Applachain Trail..two hikers with hiking sticks came down the trail towards my wife and I, with my 1 year old strapped to my back.

Caleb ran up to the first hiker, grabbed his hiking stick and snaaapped it in half...then kept his position between my son and the hikers....just being protective..thankfully the hikers were dog people and understood; however, we did change our hiking routine to eliminate such situations....

I have a lab/pit mix, my brother in laws parents have a "pure" pit (as pure as the breed could be) and the way you raise them has everything to do with their behavior. Serow is right Jerry, the veterinary books my ex girlfriend studied to be a Vet assistant say so. I can raise a golden retriever to bark and growl at every single person it sees if it's how I wanted to raise it. Aggressive dogs are that way because their bad owners didn't want to socialize them at a young age. They don't see them as a friend and a pet and just ignore them and have them for their bark rather than company.  If you chain a dog up everyday of it's life the only people it's not going to see as a threat is the hands that feed it. My girl is neutered because i didn't want a litter of puppies, a females risk of cancer increases when they have puppies and my dog is my companion, so a long life is what I want her to have. Bottom line is a lot of STUPID people give a great, gentle, and loyal breed a very bad rap. Have you tried making friends with the dog Bill? Other than a fence it might be your best defense...
