Gonna have to get a new bike
07/29/11 at 21:19:18
I just took a long road trip (in a car)... After 7 days, it really bothered me that I could not have done this on my savage due the gas tank capacity.
On my trip, some gas stations were about 100 miles apart... too close for comfort for me on my bike. On top of that no cell service in many areas.
Here is a pic on the trip... would have been better from a bike.
What I am thinking of getting.

I just did about 1300 miles with a one gallon gas can for peace of mind. Never used it but had it if I would of needed it. The only thing that limits the savage is the rider. I don't reach for the reserve till I have been a hundred miles though.

My Savage is just a toy. I've never considered it a serious motorcycle. Plenty of engine, not enough fuel capacity, even when it had a stock tank and low bars. And far too cramped for any real rides since I'm over 6' tall.
I'm in the market for another Vulcan.

I fill up every hundred miles or so, just 'cause that's a nice round number,... but, I know I can go 120 to 125 miles before hitting reserve, and 25 more after that...
60mpg's (average) X 2.8 gallon tank, = 168 miles... 140 miles conservative...

Savage gas tank and my bladder/butt/legs have about the sane mileage capacity.
Empty one, stretch two, fill one every 80-100 miles ....

Full rear fender + 15" rise bars + me acting as a sail = MAYBE 36 mpg. And I have a roughly 2 gallon tank.
Even with the saddlebags, mine is a barhopper. Except I don't drink and ride, so, it's basically just yard art anymore. Too hot to ride anyway. Too hot to finish painting it for that matter.

I just finished bobbing it last year. I have not decided what to do with it yet.

nice! I like the 8 ball vegas better but that'll work! victories are cool machines, for me their price point is a little steep, could easily get a japanese bike with more features on it for about the same or even less. or if you are going to be doing a lot of long distance stuff maybe change styles to a Kawasaki concurs or vulcan or Yamaha FJR or something with performance handling and distance comfort. but from savage to a victory, cool daddy-o!

a friend of mine is currently riding his Kawa Drifter on a long road trip - so far he's gone from Raleigh NC to KY, memphis TN, arkansas, and now in LA on the way to New orleans.
i liked the pics from natchez trace and deals gap.

The Savage is my first love when it comes to motorcycles. Never concerned with a slightly shorter range than some other bikes. The trip (3000km) I did recently I could have done just as easily on my Savage. My V-Star 1100 only gets 225km (140miles) until reserve and I never let it hit reserve anyway. My wifes Boulevard C50 gets way better milage than the V-Star so we just used my tank range as to when we filled up.
