I'm trying to add a simple explanation of how a carb works to my tuning guide in the Tech section...
Serowbot's carb tuning tips for beginners...
I'm not getting in to valve actions, or 2 stroke/ 4 stroke...
Just as simple and clear as possible...

Does this make sense?....
Any suggestions to clarify or simplify?...

The piston in your engine goes down, and it sucks fuel from the carb, the piston goes up, and it blows out of the muffler. Between the sucks and blows, a spark happens that ignites the fuel in your engine, and that explosion makes the piston go up and down.
The engine sucking on the carb, pulls fuel from the jets...
You, by turning the throttle, open a valve in the carb that lets more suck from the engine into the carb... as the valve opens more and more, it accesses more jets. Idle, pilot, needle, and main... Increasingly more fuel,... for a bigger explosion in the engine,... and the piston moves faster, making your bike go faster.
Close the throttle, and the engine pulls less gas from the carb, and you slow down.

Ludicrous Speed !... ... Huh

Well if you want to explain how a carb works in simplist terms...

A carb is simply a mixing device. It trys to mix air and fuel together to get the most efficiency from the engine. The throttle controls the amount of mixture let into the engine to get the amount of power out of it you desire.

The thing is, it's hard to get the fuel to mix in the proper amounts going from a little tiny hole at idle where you have lots of vacuum to a great big hole at full throttle where you have very little vacuum at all. The pilot, needle and main jets compensate for the change in vacuum across this range.

I don't know if you can dumb that down enough. And if you do, you may loose the ones who are capable of understanding it.

The basic purpose is to mix fuel and air and deliver through passage ways (jets) to the cylinder. As you twist the throttle more jets are allow more fuel to the cylinder.

Reply #7 - 08/17/11 at 13:42:54 Back when I went to Tech school for mechanics, teacher spent the better part of the carb section explaining the Venturi cluster, and what it does. It is what speeds up the air going in, causing the fuel to vaporize. A carb would not work without it. It deserves a mention.
